The hatchery was established in 1871 by Christian Sharps, and was abandoned after his death in 1874.[2] The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.[1] Its surviving remnants are located in Vernon's Valley Falls Park, about one mile south of the mill pond.[2]
