Stability
- Last edit on 1 September 2025, a revert, but other than that no edit warring is in place.
Media
- All media is correctly tagged with a copyright status, are relevant for the topic and have suitable captions.
Copyvio
- Earwigs Copyvio Detector points to 87.5%, that is, violation suspected; this is due to a fork of Wikipedia.
Population
- Why are refugees given so much weight here?
- I'm really not sure why I started adding that. I figured that besides the populations of countries, the population of people not in their country was relevant. There were a few other types of demographic statistics in this as well, but I eventually removed them. I'm open to reconsidering the refugee stats if you think it's undue, and really it might be worth broader discussion about how to best cover a year's global demographics.
- This section could be further developed, for example, which country registered the largest population growth rate, what's the gross world product, or the median age.
- Per above, I think it might be good to have discussion about what's most relevant to the demographics section. For the time being, I think global population is really the only critical fact for "broad coverage", and it has its own section mostly because it doesn't fit anywhere else.
Conflicts
- I find the sentence: There were 29 armed conflicts in 2003 that caused at least 25 fatalities. very confusing. I suggest a rephrase → There were 29 armed conflicts with at least 25 fatalities in 2003.
- Changed.
- Add wikilink to Democratic Republic of the Congo (optional)
- Add wikilink to insurgencies (optional)
- Linked DRC, I think insurgency is a common enough word that it would be an WP:OVERLINK.
Internal conflicts
- Add wikilink to martial law (optional)
- Add wikilink to Solomon Islands (optional)
- Linked both.
- Remove the capitalization from "Sri Lanka Civil War"
- Fixed.
- Burundi and Uganda are both located in Africa. Any reason to include them in the Asia paragraph?
- Removed "In Asia" so it's more generally about changes in internal conflicts.
- No mention of coup d'états?
- Covered under changes of leadership in the politics section since they didn't result in active conflicts
International conflicts
- Add wikilink to Iraq War (optional)
- Linked.
- The sentence: The other war between sovereign states, the Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan... reads awkwardly. I suggest a rephrase → The Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan...
- Done.
- There could be a sentence about the continuity of the War in Afghanistan.
- The Taliban insurgency is mentioned at the top of the section (I've now added a link), and suicide bombings are mentioned here under international conflicts
- No mention that the Second Congo War ended?
- Added under internal conflicts
Culture
Art and architecture
- Add wikilink to etchings (optional)
- Linked.
- Put quotations in "Old Master".
- I understand Old Master to be a formal term of art, and this risks coming off as MOS:SCAREQUOTES
- Add wikilink to SARS epidemic (optional)
- Linked
- Clarify that Tillya Tepe's treasure was rediscovered.
- I changed it to "The lost treasure of Tillya Tepe was found to be in Saddam Hussein's possession.", which reads more clearly to me.
Media
- All good here
Sports
- No mention of the finalists of the UEFA Euro 2004 and instead of a play-off match?
- I'm not very knowledgeable about sports, but my reading of the source was that the upset match was the stand-out event in the sport that year. And as far as I can tell, the play-offs took place in 2003 while UEFA Euro 2004 took place in 2004.
- I think the only major sport missing is basketball.
- I could be mistaken, but I understand basketball to have more limited reach globally, and I didn't see any major events that make 2003's basketball stand out from others. I'd consider basketball more appropriate for 2003 in sports, or 2003 in the United States for the NBA specifically
Economy
- This section could be further developed, for example, it could mention exchange rates and stock exchanges.
- Is this something covered prominently in reviews of 2003 such that it necessary for broad coverage? I didn't encounter it, but I also didn't do super in-depth research for the year's economy.
- The dot-com bubble ended in 2003, there could be sentence saying that.
- This was covered in the sources about 2002 and is mentioned in that article. Our current article on the dot-com bubble doesn't mention anything happening in 2003 except one corporation changing its name.
- There could be a more direct mention of the 2000s energy crisis.
- To me, this seems more applicable to the decade as a whole while the specific effects on oil prices are better covered in the 2003 article.
Environment and weather
- Second-hottest year on record, but what's the temperature?
- I'm not exactly sure how they determine the average, or whether they use a single measurement or multiple measurements.
- Seems strange that the only country in South America affected by severe cold weather is Peru. I don't have any suggestion without further context, but worth noting in this review.
- Likewise with Zimbabwe.
- Both Peru and Zimbabwe were singled out in the NOAA source as areas that were affected.
- Is Earth Observation Summit the most important conference on climate change in 2003? From a quick search, I could find World Climate Change Conference, Moscow and 2003 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
- Yeah, these probably aren't that significant in terms of the year. I'll remove the Earth Observation Summit. These are probably best covered at 2003 in the environment.
- Add wikilink to well-head (optional)
- Linked.
Health
Politics and law
International politics
- How so separate zones for the region of Central America?
- I don't understand the question.
Domestic politics
- The United States Department of Homeland Security began its operations in 2003;
- I think this is probably better suited for 2003 in the United States
- The largest protests ever, 15 February 2003 Iraq War protests, took place in Rome;
- I checked the overview sources I used in this article, both general and war-specific, and none of them give it any mention.
- Hu Jintao and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva were elected president in 2003.
- Lula and Hu were both elected in 2002 and are mentioned in that article. Hu was chosen as president in 2003, but the chief executive is the General Secretary, which he had already become in 2002.
Crime and international law
- Which UNSC's resolutions?
- I had previously removed these for brevity, but I've restored them.
Religion
- Add wikilink to proselytizing (optional)
- Linked.
- This section seems a tad too much Western-centric, even the paragraph about Hinduism is about how two Westerns impacted the Hindu world;
- Further, only voodooism (with one small sentence) and Hinduism are talked about other than abrahamic religions; no mention of, for example, Buddhism or a more extensive mention of folk religions?
- Were there any significant developments in non-Abrahamic religions that had attention on a global level?
Science
- Split the following sentence into two and correct the grammar mistake in the middle of it ("...was described study of..."): Among nonhuman fossils, the dinosaur Rajasaurus narmadensis was described study of Microraptor gui fossils determined that it had asymmetrical feathers on its limbs that supported a theory of arboreal evolution for dinosaurs
- Fixed the list by adding a comma
Space exploration and astronomy
- How were the Jupiter's, Neptune's and Saturn's moons discovered?
- As I understand it, the discovery of outer planet moons is just standard astronomy.
Technology
- Multiple sources describe Sobig as a worm, not as a virus;
- Fixed
- No mentions of iTunes Store's launch or Blu-ray's prototype release?
- The iTunes Store is described under media developments (though I'm open to moving it down if it seems more like a technological advance), and based on the Blu-ray article it looks like that wasn't a significant development until 2005 or 2006.
Events
- State that Dolly was a clone of a sheep instead of a mammal, something like this: Dolly, a cloned sheep, dies;
- Appears to be fixed.
- Specify that Pong Su is a ship;
- Fixed.
- Standardize 2003 Boumerdès earthquake as per other mentions of earthquakes;
- Done.
- Put italics in VLS-1.
- Fixed.
Births and deaths
Nobel Prizes
- Why is this a separate section?
- It needs sources for all statements.
- I really don't know what to tell you here. It's probably improper and I'd be fine with removing it, but this appears on every year article and I guarantee you that if it's removed a bunch of randos will keep trying to add it back because consistency is all they're worried about.
Sourcing
- Peter (2004) p. 625, OK
- Peter (2004) pp. 627-628, OK
- Sparks (2004) p. 157, OK
- Roger (2012) puts Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World at 5th place; The A.V. Club's (2004) critics puts it at 7th and out of top 10 thrice; and Scott (2003) puts it at 1st. In my view, it is undue weight to name as one of the three movies that were the most critically acclaimed.
- My thought process is that appearing on these lists at all verifies that it was critically acclaimed, and that ones appearing on several lists are due for inclusion. It's not ideal though, and I'm open to other ways to cover media in a given year.
- Lewis (2003) p. 487, OK
- Los Angeles Times (January 2003), OK
- ICC Men's Cricket World Cup (2019), OK
- BBC (March 2003), OK

- UN News (June 2003), OK
- ESA (2015), OK
- Windows2universe (2003), OK

Lead
- The first paragraph of the lead is not on the body of the article.
- That's actually a header template: {{Year article header}}

- The Blue Rider, thanks for your patience. I've replied to everything above and made changes for most of them. There are some points where the style of year articles are still tentative and open for discussion. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 🛸 02:05, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
