Better map?

The current map feels oversimplified. It doesn't tell us what bases or cities were struck and I don't get a more detailed view when I click on the map. The current map is honestly just dots on a map. It tells me what countries were struck but that's all. The average reader won't know what cities or bases were struck by looking at the map. So all I'm asking is maybe we can get a map with more info? Thanks! WhatADrag07 (talk) 19:18, 2 March 2026 (UTC)

Agreed. I much prefer the interactive OSM-based ones. Maybe one of the map wizards can arrange that. JayCubby 19:35, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
Support - I think an interactive OSM map would be so much better than the current one. The current one doesn't even show you the exact location of the strikes since it's so zoomed out and the coordinates are just slapped on an SVG. AnthonyTheGuy (talk) 02:24, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
Soft agree While I think we might need like a colour-coded map, and also with clickable links, the problem -- Iran is HUGE. Listing every base possible will clutter the map, making things worse than better. RAPTOR7762Whats up? 10:58, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
Support - Yes we need a map that can actually be zoomed in on or viewed in bigger picture/full screen with all the targets being visible. Right now if you click on the map it brings you to a basic empty map of Iran and the Middle East. This must be fixed by someone who knows how to do it. HarvardJock (talk) 07:29, 5 March 2026 (UTC)
I would need to figure out... I do know that there are indeed some articles where they ahve this interactive map from openstreetmaps RAPTOR7762Whats up? 12:00, 5 March 2026 (UTC)
OK Image's request under progression Request taken by RAPTOR7762Whats up? 15:25, 5 March 2026 (UTC).
Support - I was abut to comment this, its not very really interactive and you can't even click on it to zoom in. I can barely see the detail and I have perfect vision, can't even imagine what someone with a slight impairment would be able to see. AML KING (talk) 21:49, 5 March 2026 (UTC)
Support But the map is missing lots of locations, all locations in the current map should be copied to this. Ecrusized (talk) 07:49, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
yes working on it now. Progress has been great, just need to settle lebanon RAPTOR7762Whats up? 09:29, 7 March 2026 (UTC)

Locations struck by:
  •    United States, Israel, and allies
  •    Iran, Hezbollah, Houthis, and PMF

Ok so I'm currently doing up an interactive map. I found out the best solution -- Mediawiki's Kartographer RAPTOR7762Whats up? 05:42, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
for some reason karyographer doesn't work in talk pages RAPTOR7762Whats up? 05:43, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
I fixed it for you @RAPTOR7762, the auto indenting on the talk page had broken the code, I assume maybe you put it in an inline reply? Next time edit the full page/section and paste it Mfield (Oi!) 05:50, 6 March 2026 (UTC)

Comment Could we make Iran and allies light green to avoid creating the connotation that they are the enemy? ✶Quxyz✶ (talk) 13:28, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
I have created a proof of concept at my sandbox to avoid further cluttering this talk page. The pins could be made darker but I specifically do not want it being too close to the blue ✶Quxyz✶ (talk) 16:25, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
Since the attacks are retalitory, I believe red is the better color since its more associated with revenge, retaliation, etc. WhatADrag07 (talk) 18:17, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
I mean I could make the same argument that the United States and Israel should be red because they are the aggressors. I would say that blue makes sense for the two as they are major national colours. I'd say green is probably better for Iran because it is a major colour in Islam and carries similar connotations to blue. I could also see yellow working but I worry about contrast then. ✶Quxyz✶ (talk) 18:37, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
In accordance to the old map, having blue and red is the best RAPTOR7762Whats up? 23:10, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
Blue and green has the advantage that blue is on the flags of Israel and US but not of Iran, while green is on the flag of Iran but not US/Israel Placeholderer (talk) 17:45, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
I am more concerned with not villainizing any one side to comply with NPOV but this is a rather pedantic issue. There seems to be enough opposition where I would not recommend pursuing further. ✶Quxyz✶ (talk) 13:48, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
I personally don't see any good reason to use red—it's just a less effective indicator by national color!—e.g beyond the stereotypical Blue USA/Allies vs. Red Enemy. With all due respect to WhatADrag07 I don't think I believe red is the better color since its more associated with revenge, retaliation, etc is a good reason.
I mean, File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg as another example: yellow is on Ukraine only and red is on Russia only, so the yellow/red color scheme makes sense there Placeholderer (talk) 16:23, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
Isn't the standard to use Orange and Green as those are nominally neutral colors? See the Iran–Israel proxy conflict article. Thegunkid (talk) 10:04, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
Ok so when I creted the map, i just used what the old map used, so that was why blue and red came about. Plus, a lot of things actually have us as boue, enemies for red RAPTOR7762Whats up? 13:42, 11 March 2026 (UTC)

@Skitash: Most users seem to prefer the interactive map. Ecrusized (talk) 15:50, 8 March 2026 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Since the consensus is to use the updated map, I'll restore it. Skitash (talk) 16:00, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
Is there a way to fix the float? The map is veering to the right and it looks weird, float should be at the center. AnthonyTheGuy (talk) 16:38, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
Can we also zoom in the map a tad. I understand zooming out a tad to get a geographic sense and scale is important but we arent striking Ukraine, Greece, or Libya, I think we can tighten it up a bit so we can actually see the markers better. AML KING (talk) 17:58, 8 March 2026 (UTC)
The thing is, I tried. The zoom attribute can only work in positive integers (natural numbers). Any nearer, akrotiri and isreal gets left out. No choice RAPTOR7762Whats up? 11:18, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
Can we get some admin to edit the code so we can put decimals, I don’t see a reason why it HAS to be integers. I was testing it on its own page before and it just seems inefficiently setup lol AML KING (talk) 14:30, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
Can we also remove the skulls from the icons. It implies each attack led to a casualty which probably isn’t true. And it adds an unnecessary negative connotation for both sides. AML KING (talk) 14:31, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
I agree, not all the attacks led to casualties, which the skulls imply. It should be reverted WhatADrag07 (talk) 16:51, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
I think the skulls should be only used for fatalities. I think the meaning of casualty is a person killed or injured, but I am not a native English speaker. Pachu Kannan (talk) 17:05, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
Yes I agree, skulls should be removed. Ecrusized (talk) 08:04, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
Yes, skulls are absolutely misleading. They should only be used in cases of confirmed deaths. Sinucep (talk) 17:09, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
To any editors with more time, there are a list of symbols here that can be used for each pin: mw:Help:Extension:Kartographer/Icons and you can edit them here: Template:2026 Iran war map WhatADrag07 (talk) 22:04, 9 March 2026 (UTC)
So in case yall didn't know, I actually consulted tge list of icons. All appear to be somewhat inappropriate for this. Hence, I decided to use numbers, -number and -number-bar ti label how many strike each side did RAPTOR7762Whats up? 13:44, 11 March 2026 (UTC)

This omnibus timeline could well spin off timelines for each theater, each with its own map. kencf0618 (talk) 19:23, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
