RfC: "Consensus amongst genocide scholars there is genocide" in Wikivoice using stronger sources
- The following discussion is an archived record of a request for comment. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
Are the below sources sufficient to claim there is scholarly consensus amongst genocide scholars that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza using Wikivoice?
If so, this will be considered global consensus on the topic.
If so, we will make the following addition to the lede:
The genocide has been recognised by a United Nations special committee and commission of inquiry, the International Association of Genocide Scholars, multiple human rights groups, numerous genocide studies and international law scholars, and other experts.

The genocide has been recognised by consensus amongst genocide scholars, a United Nations special committee and commission of inquiry, the International Association of Genocide Scholars, multiple human rights groups, numerous genocide studies and international law scholars, and other experts.
- Journal of Genocide Research:
Roughly since mid-2024, there seems to have emerged a broad agreement among genocide scholars — at least those who have expressed their views on the matter — that this [genocide] is indeed the case
- Journal of Genocide Research:
By the end of 2024, when Amnesty International published a comprehensively evidenced and legally argued case, the consensus that Israel was committing genocide was becoming overwhelming
- The New Yorker:
Trachtenberg testified to a consensus opinion among historians of genocide that what is happening in Gaza can indeed be called a genocide, largely because the intent to cause death on a massive scale has been so clear in the statements of Israeli officials
- Boston University:
The opposition is political, as there is consensus amongst the international human rights legal community, many other legal and political experts, including many Holocaust scholars, that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
- International State Crime Initiative:
Cumulatively the evidence firmly indicates that in a disproportionate response to the Hamas killings of October 7 the Israeli state is employing its extensive and advanced military capacity to inflict violence on Palestinian peoples on such a scale that it is accurate to frame it as the annihilation phase of genocide [signed by 48 scholars]
- University of Western Australia:
NRC spoke to seven renowned genocide researchers about Gaza. They are not nearly as divided as public opinion: without exception, they qualify the Israeli actions as 'genocidal'. And according to them, almost all their colleagues agree with that.
- Center for International Policy:
Prominent Israel experts identifying a genocide in Gaza include Omer Bartov, Daniel Blatman, Amos Goldberg, Lee Mordechai, and Raz Segal, with Shmuel Lederman calling it the “consensus” view among genocide researchers.
- Reuters:
Eighty-six percent of those who voted among the 500-member International Association of Genocide Scholars backed the resolution declaring Israel's 'policies and actions in Gaza' had met the legal definition set out in Article II of the 1948 UN convention on genocide.

- Strong support as these sources meet WP:RS criteria to claim there is scholarly consensus amongst genocide scholars specifically. Alexandraaaacs1989 (talk) 00:00, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
- Strong oppose and procedural/SNOW close, because you are not taking into account all of the RS that say there isn't genocide; in A note on NPOV, ledes, and the erasure of dissent several reliable sources refuting the claim are presented. Also, a nearly identical RfC is still open. VidanaliK (talk to me) 00:18, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
Removal of image illustrating US delivery of munitions to Israel
Nehushtani, you removed the image of the US delivering munitions to Israel claiming that you removed an image that is not directly related to the article and doesn't really add anything.
The image caption you removed links to United States support for Israel in the Gaza war and the image itself illustrates the military aspect of that support, and in the appropriate section. Blunt trauma from airstrikes and bombardments accounts for the majority of the 70,000+ Palestinians in the Gaza Strip that Israel has killed directly. Please explain. إيان (talk) 00:03, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
- The picture is clearly relevant to the article, but would make more sense in the "Responsibility of third states and other entities" section. EvansHallBear (talk) 03:04, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
- Nehushtani has been blocked as a sockpuppet account so this thread is now redundant, but feel free to move the image if you’d like. إيان (talk) 06:16, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
- If we were to include it "Responsibility of third states and other entities" would be the better section, though I do think the "relevance" as such isn't as strong for inclusion as we would want to prevent challenge. -- Cdjp1 (talk) 11:58, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
- I think we should move it to United states section and replace the Pro-Palestine rally pic Cinaroot 💬 02:19, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
- Agreed, done. Smallangryplanet (talk) 21:05, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
- there is a duplicate image. can you remove it? 🐈 Cinaroot 💬 22:35, 22 January 2026 (UTC)

- Ignoring that I don't see how this helps the article, it does makes sense. If you are working on references to make them better, such as by adding an archive link and status, then that will increase how many characters you are counted for as author. --Super Goku V (talk) 08:57, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- It's not a competition. Regardless of how you see it, I think they are a valuable contributor to this project. 🐈Cinaroot 💬 09:06, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
- Not sure the tokenizer cares about references, or at least I don't think the original GESIS code cared. Cdjp1's contributions may be higher if refs were included. Sean.hoyland (talk) 09:11, 23 January 2026 (UTC)
