Dearest Wikipedia,

can somebody please explain how it is possible?

"The five largest ancestry groups in Iowa are: ... American (6.6%) ... The racial make up of the state is ... 0.4% American Indian. One percent of respondents report two or more races."

So where are that 5,2% of Iowa, who have American ancestry, but are not belonging to the American race, and are not belonging to two or more races? Who are they?

84.2.218.63 (talk) 15:30, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
That's a Census classification, not a Wikipedia one, so I can't say for sure. Just a guess, though, but perhaps "American" refers to those who answered the survey with "American" instead of "German" or some-such? Someone at the Wikipedia:Reference desk might know, otherwise. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 19:45, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Quad City Mallards

In the section under "Sports", it says: "The Quad City Mallards games are played in Moline, Illinois as part of the Central Hockey League."

I know Moline is part of the Quad Cities and thus there is some cultural connection with Iowa; nevertheless, this is an Illinois team. Do we really want it here? Kansan (talk) 18:00, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Good question. Do you know if they are primarily affiliated with Moline in particular or with the Quad Cities as a whole? From their name, it seems they might be affiliated with the Quad Cities generally (and would potentially belong in the article). --Philosopher Let us reason together. 19:19, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
with professional sports franchises (even semi pro) use the place in their name to denote the area of operation. For example: The New England Patriots would be within their charter to move the team to say Hartford, Connecticut or Providence, Rhodes Island without changing their name. I would say that the Quad City Mallards belong to the area not to a single state. Two of the Quad Cities are in Iowa so it belongs in this article as long as there is a place for it. Despyria (talk) 03:04, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

I didn't read all the political sections, but this one wasn't done well. Wrong information, partisan language, slanted adjectives, and poor grammar. To top all that off there is little to no context and even less critical information to support the suppositions. The question becomes, is this a section that has value or is it propaganda? The one I just edited was a political piece froth with easily disproved errors and framed in a subjective manner. The framing is still subjective and the section is suspect to me. Despyria (talk) 02:53, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

While I don't see any "propoganda" there, it is poorly written, outdated, and has an inappropriate emphasis on the presidency and federal government. The paragraph on congressmen looks somewhat slanted and is sufficiently outdated that it could probably be removed without hurting anything. Oh, and the entire thing is unreferenced. If you wanted to spend some time fixing it up, I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate it! (I'd help, but I'm pushing a long-delayed Iowa project of my own at the moment.)  Philosopher Let us reason together. 03:58, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
Personally I'd scrap the whole section as useless. Look at the previous verse of the Voter trends because that's a cleaned up one. The information was largely wrong and easily variably so. As you pointed out it had little to do with actually anything but trivia. I think I could polish it but I would be banging my head against the wall for something that I don't see as substantive. I'll wait to see if anyone else weighs in with why this is worth while before I eliminate it. Despyria (talk) 20:59, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Go ahead, then. I'd leave the first four sentences - the broad history - in the "political parties" section if the entire voter trends section is going to be removed, though.  Philosopher Let us reason together. 03:07, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Vibrant? Historic?

The phrase, "Other communities with vibrant historic downtown areas include" appears four times in the article. Once would constitute wishful thinking. Four times amount to fantasy of the highest order.

Iowa is, in global terms, a farming backwater. To suggest that any part of it is "vibrant" shows a disconnect with the world. This may, ironically, be quite a suitable outlook for an Iowan. However, Wikipedia is supposed to be a global encyclopaedia, rather than a sort of hokey advertisement for dreams of the quiet life. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.159.111.8 (talk) 23:04, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

K6ka, Unfortunately, almost a third of URL's on this site are dead, because they were never archived. I flagged the site with "linkrot", which isnt exactly right but hits the core. Note: There is no other appropriate flag to point this out. I saw you removed the linkrot tag, even though there are innumerable dead links. I am restoring the flag.--Wuerzele (talk) 20:33, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi Iowa Wikipedians! Long time. Just wanted to let you know that I have finally put my collection of 7204 photographs from 213 towns in 59 counties in Iowa on line. Trivia.

It's the only state with two vowels for its abbreviation. It's the only state whose eastern and western borders are formed by rivers. Who actually cares about this meaningless nonsense? This is not encyclopedic. Is Wikipedia just a place-mat in a truck-stop diner? Is it the only state who's third largest county contains more than seventeen obelisks? Can I put that in?

GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:Iowa/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

One of my favorite states; looking forward to reading the article! Wug·a·po·des 00:27, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

  • A first comment while skimming the article, I feel like the lead may not be an adequate summary. There seem to be sections on "law and government" and "culture" which I don't think is covered in the lead. Also there seems to be an outstanding expansion tag at Iowa#Arts which will need resolved before I can pass the article. Wug·a·po·des 00:34, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Thoughts from an independent reviewer

Not easy for a second reviewer to know what you may feel uncomfortable about, but you're probably right that the lead doesn't fully summarize the article.
More serious are the unaddressed 'citation needed' tags (I've added a few more), and the quantity of uncited material towards the end of the article.
I can't see the point of lists in 'Colleges and universities', given there's already a freestanding list of those, so I'd suggest swift removal, and citation of the small remaining text in that section.
'Geology and terrain' needs more citations.
'Climate' is poorly cited.
'Trade and Indian removal, 1814–1832' is uncited.
'Agricultural expansion, 1865–1930' is uncited.
'Political speech' is uncited.
'Arts' as you note is too short, and needs citing.
'Sports' and its several subsections are almost wholly uncited.
'Iowans' is completely uncited. The single-entry 'Further reading' might be better used actually citing some of these 'Iowans', and then that section can be removed.
The 'External links' look a bit scrappy and numerous; again, it would be best to use most of them to cite the text, and remove them from the section.
Citations like 153, 158 are missing most of their parameters.

When those issues are addressed the article may not be perfect but I think it will be covering "the main points" for GA. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:44, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

FWIW it looks like Helloimahumanbeing is making edits to the article, maybe to address these points, but I wanted to ping them to make sure they were aware of the comments and to encourage them to post something on this page to show if the points are/are not being addressed. Kees08 (Talk) 21:23, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
Glad to see Helloimahumanbeing is back! I'm willing to start up the review if you'll be around and editing. Wug·a·po·des 21:29, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
@Wugapodes: I won't be able to make any edits for a while so I'd put the review on hold. Helloimahumanbeing (talk) 14:22, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
@Helloimahumanbeing: Do you have a rough idea of how long "a while" would be? It may be easier to renominate the article when you do have time. Wug·a·po·des 20:54, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
@Wugapodes: Three weeks at most Helloimahumanbeing (talk) 18:18, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
That's not too bad; I'll get to work on this and when you have time we can discuss more. Wug·a·po·des 19:40, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
Wugapodes, Helloimahumanbeing, it's been nearly six weeks, not three, and nothing has happened. I'd suggest closing the nomination, since this is clearly not a good time for it, and renominating later; this has been open for nearly four months. BlueMoonset (talk) 13:41, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
That's fair. I've closed the nomination as unsuccessful. Wug·a·po·des 20:53, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
