Status of Turkish bases in Syria
Given the successful process of updating the article's reference to Al-Tanf, I'd like to try updating the references to the Turkish bases in Syria too. Last August, the two countries signed a "significant military cooperation agreement" which, among other things, includes "Deployment of Turkish experts to support the modernization of Syrian military systems". This confirms that the new Syrian government sees the Turkish military presence as an invited ally and not an invading occupier.
One objection to this assessment might have been that 'the Syrian government which made this agreement is not in de facto control of the areas where the Turkish bases are located', and therefore the bases are an occupation from the perspective of the forces that operate there. However, the international law concerning occupations doesn't give a veto to non-state groups, and, more importantly, as of this month, the local forces have been integrated with the Syrian government. As reported by Reuters: "Syria and the SDF struck a wide-ranging deal to integrate the Kurdish civilian and military authorities".
If no one finds a citation disputing this new reality, I will (after a week has passed) remove the three rows in the table that correspond to Turkey's three (former) occupations in Syria, and move them to the "Historical occupations" section (specifically sub-section "2000-2019", which is the time period when the occupations started). ~2025-38065-73 (talk) 16:31, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
- This is now done. I also fixed a formatting error with a table in the "Historical occupations" section. ~2025-38065-73 (talk) 23:15, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
Status of Guantanamo Bay?
Considering the dispute of Guantanamo Bays ownership, and the lease on the base not being recognized by Cuba, does the occupation of the base by the US count as a military occupation? ~2026-10560-35 (talk) 16:47, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
- What do the sources say? What is the quality of those sources? Does it say that Guantanamo is a military occupation? -Serialjoepsycho- (talk) 18:43, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
