Move discussion in progress

Subfamily name

This article says the Genus Icthyophaga and the Genus Haliaeetus are both part of the subfamily Haliaeetinae, which is part of the family Accipitridae. But the articles for Icthyophaga and Haliaeetus both say they're part of the Subfamily Buteoninae instead. And none of the articles for Icthyophaga, Haliaeetus, Accipitridae, or Buteoninae make any reference to Haliaeetinae, and the article for Haliaeetinae doesn't make any reference to Buteoninae. I'm not an expert, but I suspect this is outdated. - Burner89751654 (talk) 21:27, 13 March 2025 (UTC)

I think we need to have a discussion on which authority to follow, though I suspect Haliaeetinae might be downranked to a tribe (Haliaeetini) or even a subtribe (Haliaeetina) due to only encompassing two genera. I'm not a birder though. Anthropophoca (talk) 02:21, 21 August 2025 (UTC)
This article definitely needs a revamp for sure. While the IOC does not go into specifics of ranking systematics below the familial-level, most researchers seem to treat this as a tribe of Buteoninae. Phylogenetic evidence also support this notion, though admittedly at a more basal position in among the buteonines, the sea-eagles. Piranga94 (talk) 03:04, 6 September 2025 (UTC)
