Merger proposal

  • Oppose - A smartwatch is NOT a watch phone. You cannot attach the name "phone" to a device that does not give you the ability to make phone calls. A watch phone is a phone that is shaped like a watch. A phone by definition: ..is a telecommunications device that permits two or more users to conduct a conversation when they are not in the same vicinity of each other.. A user does not have the ability to make calls with his smartwatch to another user to conduct a conversation. Only a watch phone has this ability. Therefore the line that says "A smartwatch or smart watch, alternatively known as a watch phone" is wrong and should be deleted. Or it could be changed to: "..some smart watches are also called watch phones because users can make phone calls with them without the need of additional external devices ..". Most of the smartphones in the Smartwatch#List_of_smart_watches_in_production are NOT watch phones because users cannot make calls with those devices unless they pair them with a cellphone device. The only watch phones on that list are the LG GD910, Omate TrueSmart and the Hyundai MB 910, Fashion S9110, Z1 Android Watch-Phone that mysteriously ended up on the Smartwatch#See_also list. Dick Tracy

Dick Tracy's 2-way wrist radio eventually became a 2-way wrist television. It was replaced with a 2-way wrist computer. There were different models of the wrist computer. At least one had something similar to a tiny CD reader. Another could do simple chemical analysis. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.131.227.51 (talk) 14:51, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

iPod Nano + wristband

Should this mention the previous generation iPod Nano touch that was square and for which people made wristbands, and turned into a smartwatch? -- 70.24.244.158 (talk) 03:38, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

I don't believe so; the iPod Nano was not intended to be a smartwatch. The potential for smartwatch-like capabilities was realised by a third party. Bailmoney27 talk 17:03, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

List cleanup

The list of smartwatches in production is getting a bit messy. Anyone have any suggestions on how to clean it up? I'd considered converting it to a table with more information such as release date, manufacturer, etc., though with how lengthy the list is getting, it may be beneficial to move said table to a separate page. Comments? Bailmoney27 talk 17:05, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

→ I agree. A timetable with release and discontinuation date would be great. The Nike+ Fuel Band (in the table incorrectly as "NikeFuel") is no longer produced, as well as the Nike+ Sportwatch GPS (not listed in the table). --129.15.64.220 (talk) 22:37, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

I think we can safely remove the Moto 360 from being in development, no? It was released September 5, and is currently available for retail purchase. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.62.238.110 (talk) 22:27, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Sony SmartWatch 2 with or without GPS?

In the section Smartwatch Hardware comparison Sony's SmartWacht 2 is not marked to have GPS but in the section Smart watch comparison it does. So does it have GPS or not? This discrepancy should be corrected, but I don't know the specifications of the SmartWatch. --85.177.89.123 (talk) 23:40, 26 October 2014 (UTC)

Omate TrueSmart

Shouldn't the Omate TrueSmart be mentioned? It was the first stand alone smartwatch with built in phone and all the smartphone stuff like Android (running apps natively), gps, bluetooth, microsd card reader, camera. It was a kickstarter campaign and then briefly available on Omate's website. In the end it failed to live up to the expectations in terms of software and customer service. But it's a first in several regards nonetheless.PizzaMan (♨♨) 12:04, 6 December 2014 (UTC)

Smart bands

Smart band is currently a redirect to activity tracker but is looking as if it's a new type of tech that can't be considered a smart watch or a mere activity tracker. The Montblanc e-Strap, Kairos T-band, and Modillian smart strap appear to be the first and given watch owners' desire to have smart functionality without giving up their existing watches, I suspect there will be more. This could qualify as a section in the article and in time a separate article.

Feature comparison table

If you arrange the table by resolution, it puts the apple watch first because of the way it is laid out, the samsung is actually higher res. Someone with better skills than me could perhaps fix this. 82.43.99.224 (talk) 13:01, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

List of Android Wear smartwatches

I have been considering creating a page for Android Wear smartwatches. Any suggestions or questions? Daylen (talk) 21:17, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Adding other well known Operating Systems

The Operating Systems section could be completed with well known OSes (allowing third party apps) used on current smartwatches : Garmin Connect IQ, Fitbit OS, stock Android (Amazfit and low-end watches), which are much more used than Asteroid/Sailfish/Ubuntu already listed. Pebble OS could be also added for history and as a bit related to Fitbit OS.

I did propose a contribution to this section on may-22, but rejected due to my bad english ErwanD75 (talk) 20:50, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

smart strap, more

There is a lot more to be said - other important segment of smartwatches. It could not just provide additional functionality to smartwatches, it could also provide smart functionality to "dumb watches" like Sony Wena Wrist Pro. there was Hands On Talk watch with a unique strap for calls , mudra band has 3 neural sensors, meta is working on a emg band , there was ECG-equipped KardiaBand for Apple Watch , there is also whoop band, Aktiia 24/7 Blood Pressure Monitoring Bracelet. YHE BP Doctor Fit has inflatable air cuff Huawei Watch D also has inflatable air cuffand Omron HeartGuide has one also (dynamic watch straps), Microsoft Band. 5.39.151.100 (talk) 20:19, 8 April 2025 (UTC)

List of sensors in smartwatches

I think it'd be good to list all of the sensors that are used in smartwatches. It's practically a field within a field. It's the main focus of this product category since inception and there is a race to develop new sensors and to cram one sensor more in that small form factor to one-up competitors (Masimo, Alivecor lawsuits against apple ) and it's also one of the main pillars in custumer's purchase decisions. We have unique ones like Fitbit's Body Scan (EDA) -measures "micro-sweat levels" to calculate stress levels., Apple's ECG, BIA sensor ... apple is working on blood pressure tracking and samsung on non-invasive blood glucose monitoring , smartwatches are analyzing AGEs Index and arterial stiffness (don't know which sensors are used) , Apple's AFiB and Samsung's IHRN , Fitbit arterial stiffness Fitbit blood pressure Samsung temperature sensor - track menstrual cyclesECG on Fitbit Sense smartwatch, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 apparently had blood pressure readings. blood pressure sensor types inflatable cuff dor blood pressure watch- 3rd inflatable cuff dor blood pressure watch -1st/2nd, inflatable cuff dor blood pressure watch -1st/2nd, maybe in the form of a table

Development has marched on. Ariane Garrett at Boston University has demonstrated analytical techniques applied to PPG that push BP accuracy beyond the cuff: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.08.16.608163v1.full.pdf It is possible that this technology has been integrated into the Valdrus Vitro and Valdus VE31 smartwatches - The sensors on these watches appear to include high density fiber optic arrays. Detailed documentation is lacking.  Preceding unsigned comment added by ~2026-10461-86 (talk) 18:47, 16 February 2026 (UTC)

Product category specific controls

It might be good to include in the article; rotating bezel, rotating crown, touch bezel/digital bezel (don't know if there are others). Those are unique (if not unique, have a central point in navigation) to smartwatches if I am not mistaken. 5.39.151.100 (talk) 20:19, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
