Seeing as I have several GAN's, I figured I should review an important road article.
- Lead
- "it is also a communal highway in the Central and North coasts, where it connects cities such as Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Salinas, Eureka, and more." - the "and more" isn't needed since you already said "such as"
- "but this segment was switched to I-5 in 1964." - since this is the first instance of it, you should spell out Interstate 5 here
- "US 101 south of the Bay Area has been dedicated as El Camino Real, north of the Golden Gate Bridge as Redwood Highway" - El Camino and Redwood had already been linked, so watch out for overlinking
- "Several memorial and tourist designations have been applied to sections of the route, and segments that run concurrently with SR 1 are also known as Pacific Coast Highway, as that is the name of SR 1." - I suggest splitting this into two sentences, and rewording so you don't say "SR 1" twice
- Route description
- "The bridge along with the rest of US 101 is also part of the National Highway System." - needs commas
- "About 1+1⁄2 miles (2.4 km) " - the "1⁄2" looks weird when you have 2.4 km. Same later on with "14+1⁄2-mile (23.3 km)"
- "Throughout the rest of the Central Coast, US 101 switches between freeway and expressway status,[17] but despite occasional cross-traffic it has unimpeded traffic, as there are no stop signs or traffic signals until San Francisco." - should probably be two sentences
- "about five miles (8.0 km)" - this looks odd. The numbers and units should be consistent.
- "This shared highway then crosses the Golden Gate Bridge." - I feel like you could mention a little bit about the bridge. Like, is it the longest bridge along 101? Or even that it was once the longest suspension bridge in the world.
- I feel like you say the word "then" too many times, and several sentences has it more than once.
- "As of 2026, high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes were being added to US 101 between Summerland and Santa Barbara, and nearby Carpinteria featured peak-hour HOV lanes as well." - how many HOV lanes are there? The "were being added" implies it's an under construction thing, so the wording could use improvement.
- "Solo drivers may also use the FasTrak standard tag and drivers without any FasTrak tag will be assessed a toll violation, even if they qualify to use the lane for free." - can you rewrite so you don't say FasTrak twice in the same sentence?
- "A 2004 American Highway Users Alliance (AHUA) study found the US 101/I-405 interchange to be the most congested interchange in the nation" - damn, this should also be in the lead, something about the congestion
- History
- "In Del Mar, US 101 aligned with Torrey Pines bypass, dubbed Million Dollar Highway[115] and built in 1933 to bypass a dangerous highway that predated federal designations." - on the long side
- "At Doheny Park north of San Clemente, US 101 originally split into two routes, with US 101 Alternate serving the beachside cities before converging with the main route in Oxnard,[121] while the main route veered inland through San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Niguel, and Mission Viejo, after which it zigzagged through Irvine and Tustin,[122] with a concentrated section in Tustin once containing the Tustin Garage and up to ten fuel stations for motorists traveling from the south." - too long
- It seemed like LA and Central Coast segment was going south to north, but then the "San Francisco Bay Area" switched to date, so I was confused for a second whether you covered the history between Salinas and SF. Nothing major, not even sure if it needs changing, but it was something that stood out.
- "a segment built between Outlet Creek and Reeves Creek in the late 1930s eliminated forty-seven turns" - numbers greater than 10 should be written as numbers (47)
- "Construction of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing also began in 2024; this crossing, a vegetated overpass spanning US 101 in Agoura Hills, will connect the Santa Monica Mountains with the Simi Hills and upon completion will be the largest wildlife crossing in the world." - could be worth adding to the lead, that's pretty significant.
- "The new approach, known as Presidio Parkway, incorporated two sets of tunnels and opened in 2015,[237] while the Presidio Tunnel Tops recreational area, located above the tunnels, opened in 2022" - I suggest delinking the Presidio Parkway, since it redirects to the Golden Gate Bridge article, and is out of date
- Names and memorials
- "Additionally, in Eureka, US 101 is known by various names: Michael J. Burns Freeway on the expressway,[276] Broadway on the north–south street segment[277][278] (largely unsigned and not registered on Caltrans' logs),[14][30] and by its street names along its downtown couplet." - this sentence would be improved significantly with all of the references at the end
The article looks decent. So hopefully none of the comments are too difficult to address. Lemme know if you have any questions. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:04, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
- At the moment, I'm working with your suggestions in my Sandbox. There are a few things I'm uncertain of. I just don't see how the fractions in the quantitative numbers in the RD are problematic. What does the MOS say about numbers? Also, I don't how to incorporate the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing and traffic congestion information to the lead. Any suggestions for going about it? Nebulous2357 (talk) 19:42, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
- As for fractions, this is the part of the MOS I was referring to - "Comparable values near one another should be all spelled out or all in figures", as well as "Non-metric (imperial and US customary) measurements may use fractions or decimals (51⁄4 inches; 5.25 inches)... within-article consistency is desirable." I took that to mean that if one value doesn't have fractions, then neither should the other. As for the Wildlife Crossing, I'd mention that it will be the largest wildlife crossing in the world. That's important and interesting. As for traffic, I'd mention that US 101 is one of the most congested freeways in the US. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:11, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- Suggestion for how to include the wildlife crossing in lead. Maybe an entire paragraph at the end of the lead about firsts and superlatives: most congested interchange in the county, most congested segment in the country, largest wildlife crossing in the world, first stack interchange in the world, lots of firsts and superlatives related to the golden gate bridge, I don't know if there are any others. This paragraph could also include all the landmarks 101 passes by: Hollywood and the Hollywood Bowl, Universal Studios, LA union station, SF City Hall, Silicon Valley, SF airport, the presidio, palace of fine arts, Frog Woman Rock, avenue of the giants, redwood state and national parks, Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, that's more than enough if you decide to go this route

- Well, it's a work in progress, but my copy-edit is ready. I read the RD of I-8 as a baseline for your suggestions. Should be able to see the updated version soon. Nebulous2357 (talk) 18:38, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- Many thanks for your copyedits and the work you've done! I'm happy to pass now. Great work. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:53, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
