Vetch is also the name of the main character in the book "Joust" by Mercedes Lackey.
In Plutarch's "Lives of the Noble Romans" the surname of famous Cicero was presumably connected to a vetch, which Latins called Cicero.
- Vetch may not be suitable for single-stomach humans, "due to a toxin," but I have eaten a LOT of the little peas inside the vetch pods, with no ill effects whatsoever. 69.149.42.146 (talk) 05:37, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
Claimed type species appears dubious
Most of my research has indicated the type species of genus Vicia to be Vicia sativa, not Faba sativa.
- While Faba is a synonym of Vicia, Faba sativa is not a synonym of Vicia sativa; it is a synonym of Vicia faba.
- The timeline makes no sense. Vicia and Vicia sativa were published by L. at the same time, in Species Plantarum, on 1 May 1753, only two pages apart, 734 and 736. Mill. published the genus Faba on 28 January 1754, not even a year later. However, Faba sativa itself wasn't published until 1800, and wasn't chosen as a lectotype for Faba until 1960. Faba was only synonymized to Vicia in 2001.
- The authority of Moench. seems a fiction. IPNI has records of 1,563 names published by him and Faba sativa is not one of them. It does have a record of Faba sativa being published, but by Bernh..
