Geography

Tunchang is a county in the Hainan Province of People's Republic of China. Covering approximately 1,240 km2 (480 sq mi), it is located in north-central Hainan and bridges the province’s northern plains and mountainous central and southern highlands.[1][2] Slowly ascending from the northern plains, the region reaches elevations of up to 400 m (1,300 ft) towards the hills in the south. This varied terrain contributes to diverse landscapes, including agricultural land and forested slopes.[2]

Tunchang has a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen Am).

Demographics and economy

The population in 2022 was approximately 308,038, slightly down from 308,460 in 2021. The demographics reflect rural-to-urban migration, with population peaking at 313,500 in 2013, then varying through the decade.[6]

Agriculture dominates the economy with principal outputs including tropical fruit such as mango and lychee, dehong wood, rubber, and rice.[2] There are about six rural tourism sites in Tunchang and forms part of developing local tourism.[7] Eco-cultural tourism which links nature, ethnic heritage, and rural experiences, is on the rise.[8]

Local culture is rooted in traditional agricultural life, with customs shaped by seasonal fruit harvesting and rural community rituals.[2] The county includes Li ethnic minority villages; Li cultural crafts—such as rattan weaving and plant-dye textiles—are showcased in local tourism.[9]
