It elects one deputy to the lower house of Congress for each three-year legislative session by means of the first-past-the-post system. Votes cast in the district also count towards the calculation of proportional representation ("plurinominal") deputies elected from the fifth region.[2][3]
The 29th district was created by the 1977 electoral reforms, which increased the number of single-member seats in the Chamber of Deputies from 196 to 300. Under that plan, the State of Mexico's seat allocation rose from 15 to 34.[4] The new districts were first contended in the 1979 mid-term election.
The current member for the district, elected in the 2024 general election, is Gerardo Ulloa Pérez of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).[5][6]
District territory
Under the 2023 districting plan adopted by the National Electoral Institute (INE), which is to be used for the 2024, 2027 and 2030 federal elections,[7] the 29th district is located in the east of the Greater Mexico City urban area and covers 288 electoral precincts (secciones electorales) across a portion of one of the state's 125 municipalities:[8][9]
- Nezahualcóyotl (south-western part).[a]
The head town (cabecera distrital), where results from individual polling stations are gathered together and tallied, is Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl. In the 2020 Census, the district reported a total population of 416,166.[1]
