one of the founders of the Cleveland Bar Association [1]
judge of court of common pleas in Lorain County for several years relocated to Cleveland in 1869 and formed a legal practice with F.T. Backus and E.J. Estep. "one of the most successful coroproation lawyers who ever practices at the Cleveland bar" [2]

was legal counsel in some of the most important railway consolidations of his time'notably, was the moving force in the amalgamtion of the Columbus, Hocking Valley & Toledo Railroad
for William Vanderbilt, he conducted the negotiations that let Vanderbil purhchase the New York, Chicago & STl Lous Railway.
