Early Appearances

Upon winning the 2009 Open Cup, the Seattle Sounders FC qualified for the 2010–11 tournament. After winning their first Champions League game against A.D. Isidro Metapán of El Salvador, Seattle qualified for the group stage. Scoring 6 goals in 6 games, the Sounders were eliminated at the group stage, beating C.D. Marathón 0-2 on Matchday #5 of the tournament.

The following season saw Seattle once again qualifying through the Open Cup. In the preliminary round, Seattle faced Panama's San Francisco, winning 2-1 on aggregate after extra time. The group stages saw Seattle win their first three games with a combined 7 goals while conceding 2. The next three matchdays saw Seattle win a single point, away at Comunicaciones. Seattle still managed to advance to the knockout round, where they played Santos Laguna. The first leg saw Seattle win 2-1 but the return leg saw the Mexican side win 6-1, with two goals from former Sounder Hérculez Gómez, as the Sounders lost 7-3 on aggregate.

The 2012-2013 tournament was the best result the Sounders have managed thus far. After winning all four group matches, outscoring opponents 12 to 5, Seattle took on Tigres UANL in the quarterfinals. After losing the first leg in Mexico by the score of 1-0 and being down 0-1 at halftime, Seattle's DeAndre Yedlin scored his first goal as a professional to lead a comeback that ended in a 3-1 victory for the Sounders, with goals from Djimi Traore and Eddie Johnson. Seattle would become the first MLS club to defeat an Liga MX club in the tournament.^[1]

Seattle would lose in the semifinals by an aggregate score of 2-1 to Santos Laguna. Sammy Ochoa was the teams leading scorer with 4 goals.

Return to Continental play

The 2015-2016 tournament saw Seattle return to Continental competition for the first time in three years. Seattle became the first club to qualify for the tournament and would go on to face Cascadia Cup foe Vancouver Whitecaps FC and 2015 Honduran Clasura champions, A.D. Isidro Metapán.^[2]

They advanced from the Group Stages after a 2-1-1 record, including a 3-0 win against Vancouver in the group-deciding game. Lamar Neagle led the scoring after scoring 3 goals in 4 games. Despite Clint Dempsey's two goals in the first leg, they would go on to lose 5-3 on aggregate against eventual winners Club América in the quarter-finals.
