SM1 Capital and Security Limited, trading as Somo, is a UK-based non-bank lender specialising in short-term property finance. The company provides first, second, third, and equitable charge bridging loans, and is headquartered in Greater Manchester, England.[1]
History
Somo was founded in 2014 by Louis Alexander. It launched as the UK’s first crowd-funded bridging lender under the name The BridgeCrowd. In 2021, the company rebranded to Somo following a funding line from Deutsche Bank reportedly worth £300 million.[2]
Operations
The company originates and underwrites loans secured against UK property. As of 2025, it has completed over 2,000 loans, with a reported total value exceeding £400 million.|[3] Somo offers a range of regulated and unregulated bridging loans, including: First, second and third charge loans – structured for a variety of borrower and security types.[4] Somo Prime – a first charge product tailored for lower-risk borrowers.[5] Valuation Only™ – loans based solely on property value, without requiring clean credit, income evidence, affordability checks, or an exit strategy.[6] Equitable charges – used when first charge consent is refused.
