Theories about motive
Kohberger has not publicly stated his motive for the murders and investigators have not found any proof of a prior connection between Kohberger and the victims.
Psychological pathology
Animosity toward women
Targeted attack on one victim
One theory is that Kohberger entered the home with the intention of killing one victim on the third floor and ended up killing four people as he unexpectedly encountered others in the house.[1] Writer Howard Blum states this argument in his book, writing "Once in the kitchen, he proceeds up the narrow staircase to the third floor. And this is, arguably, telling. If he were aimless, driven only by furious emotions, he would burst forward into either of the second-floor bedrooms."[2]
Kohberger began the murders in Mogen's third floor bedroom, walking past the two occupied bedrooms on the second floor of the home. I
. Many close to the case believe that Kohberger entered the home with the intention to attack someone on the third floor. Kaylee Goncalves's mother Kristi summarized this theory as "He intended to kill one, and killed four."
Some close to the case, including lead prosecutor Bill Thompson and Kaylee's mother Kristi Goncalves, have therefore theorized that Kohberger entered the home with the intention of attacking someone on the third floor, where both Mogen and Goncalves had their bedrooms.[3][4]
According to this theory, Kohberger had not expected to find the two women in the same bedroom and decided only in that moment to kill both. He then encountered Kernodle, who was awake at the time, and then decided to kill her and Chapin.[4][1]
However, investigators have found no evidence that Kohberger was in anyway aware of any of the victims before the murders. No evidence has been found that shows Kohberger had ever followed any of the victims or surviving roommates on social media, met any of them, or been to the house prior to the murders. Thompson has stated that though he personally believes that either Mogen or Goncalves were the target, it is also possible that Kohberger did not choose the home until moments before the murders.[1]
Investigators combed through surveillance video of the neighborhood and found no evidence that Kohberger's vehicle had been to the house prior to the night of the murders. His cell phone did show that he had been in Moscow 12 times prior to the murders, but the tower that his phone pinged off of covered a wide enough area to encompass the high way that brought traffic from Pullman to Moscow.
Some friends of Mogen have theorized that Kohberger had met and become obsessed with Mogen at the restaurant, the Mad Greek, where she and Kernodle worked as waitresses. The theory is that Kohberger, who is a vegan, may have gone to the restaurant as it served vegan options.
