Mount Kenya and Aberdares Region Economic Bloc
The Mount Kenya and Aberdares Region Economic Bloc (formerly known as the Central Region Economic Bloc or CEREB) is a voluntary inter-county economic cooperation framework in Kenya, established through a memorandum of understanding among ten counties within mount Kenya region.[1] The bloc was created to promote regional economic integration, policy harmonization, and joint development planning among member counties.[1]
The bloc comprises the counties of Nyeri, Nyandarua, Meru], Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Kirinyaga, Murang'a Laikipia, Nakuru, and Kiambu.[1] These counties share geographic, economic, and social linkages that underpin the bloc’s collaborative framework. The bloc was formed to leverage collective strengths, optimize the use of shared resources, and enhance trade, investment, and employment opportunities within the region.[2]
The bloc’s objectives include increasing market access for goods and services, coordinating joint infrastructure and economic projects, and advocating for equitable national policies such as revenue sharing that reflect the region’s contribution to the economy.[3] Member counties have also collaborated to promote priority agricultural products—including coffee, potatoes, avocado, macadamia, and bananas—within national value chain programs.[4]
Under Kenya’s devolved governance system, economic blocs such as the Mount Kenya and Aberdares Region Economic Bloc do not constitute formal administrative units. They function as collaborative platforms where county governments work together on mutual economic interests without altering constitutional county boundaries or governance structures.[5]
