Aviation In-Flight/Maritime Medical Security From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MedAire is a medical and security risk management provider for aviation and maritime industries, known for establishing its global remote medical advisory service, MedLink[1] for the air transport industry. Founded in 1985 by flight nurse, Joan Sullivan Garrett,[2] the company established the use of ground-based physicians to provide real-time medical guidance to flight crews during in-flight emergencies.[3][4]

  • Comment: We don't care what the company would have it say on their website, we care what secondary and independent sources have said about the company. Trade journals and promotional pieces do not form WP:RS from which to draft an article, and tangential mentions and trivial coverage don't aid in demonstrating notability. Even your photos make it look like you're trying to publish a brochure. Bobby Cohn 🍁 (talk) 17:29, 18 September 2025 (UTC)

Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, MedAire operates a network of global response centers and supplies specialized medical kits and crew training to major commercial airlines, business aircraft operators, and maritime.[5] Since 2008, MedAire has been a wholly owned subsidiary of International SOS.[6]

History

Joan Sullivan Garrett founded MedAire in 1985 following her experience as a flight nurse, identifying a lack of specialized medical support for travelers in remote environments.[2] In 1987, MedAire introduced MedLink[7], a service that connects aircraft to emergency physicians via radio or satellite phone and reduces the need to divert planes for emergency landings.[8]

The company expanded its international operations in 2001 by opening a European headquarters in Farnborough, United Kingdom.

In 2003, MedAire became publicly traded on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX:MDE) following its acquisition of Global Doctor.[9]

International SOS acquired MedAire in 2008.[10] Following the acquisition, MedAire made additional purchases including Yacht Lifeline in 2011[11], and Ocean Medical International in 2013.[12]

In 2024, MedAire was selected for the Space-Edge Accelerator program with Arizona State University and Blue Origin, focusing on medical infrastructure for the commercial space industry.[13]

Services

MedAire supplies medical and emergency travel safety services,[14] medical kits, and training to aviation and maritime clients. The company's MedLink service connects clients to medical professionals via satellite phone, radio, or internet.[15][16] MedAire handles hundreds of thousands of assistance calls annually.[8]

In addition to developing digital medical equipment for use by non-medical personnel in remote aviation and marine settings, the company assists aviation and maritime operations with real-time security intelligence and assessments for crew and passenger safety. This includes monitoring geopolitical developments, health outbreaks, and local security threats to assist in voyage and flight planning.[17]

Industry Research

Studies using MedAire's data found that approximately 15.5% of in-flight emergencies involve pediatric passengers, with 0.5% of cases requiring aircraft diversions.[18]

A recent cohort study that MedAire participated in was published September 2025[19][20] noting that in-flight medical events have increased to 1 event per 212 flights with 1.7% leading to the flight's diversion.

Recognition

1997: The Flight Safety Foundation Business Aviation Meritorious Service Award[21]

2024: The National Aeronautic Association awarded MedAire the Clifford Henderson Trophy[22]
