From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arabic is the primary language spoken in the Arab world, which encompasses the Middle East and much of North Africa. While the standard Arabic form is known as Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)[1], over 30 varieties of Arabic are assigned codes by the ISO, which arise from influence from other languages. Colloquial Arabic is used in everyday conversations, whereas MSA is used in formal settings, such as in writing and media. Children often learn colloquial (regionalized) Arabic through immersion, with MSA being later taught formally in school.[2]
