Mariya Russell (c. 1989) became the first black woman to earn a Michelin star in September 2019 while working as a chef at Kumiko and Kikkō[1]. She’s the first Black woman to receive the star from the Michelin guide book in its 93-year-old history. Her work contributed to Kumiko winning the Best New Restaurant award from Food & Wine magazine in 2019[2].

Early Life

Russel grew up in Springfield, Ohio with her parents and four sisters[1]. She moved to Columbus, Ohio for high school where she participated in a career academy that first introduced her to the idea of becoming a chef[3]. After high school, she moved to Chicago, Illinois to attend the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago where she graduated in 2008.
