Live in Las Vegas is the first live album by American musician Al Jardine, best known as a co-founder of the Beach Boys. It was recorded during a residency in November and December 1999 in Las Vegas, while Jardine was touring with his band Beach Boys' Family and Friends. Jardine formed this band after being excluded by bandmate Mike Love from touring with the official Beach Boys touring band after fellow bandmate Carl Wilson died in 1998. By the time of the album's release, Love, Al Jardine, and BRI were involved in litigation over the band name, which was not solved until 2008.(insert end note about select 2011-12 reunion dates, 2012 reunion tour, and one-off 2014 reunions)

Islands in the Sun is an EP by American musician Al Jardine, best known as a co-founder of the Beach Boys.

The EP includes guest appearances from Al Jardine's Beach Boys bandmate Bruce Johnston, Neil Young, and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers,^[2] all of whom had previously collaborated with Jardine on his debut solo studio album, A Postcard from California (2010).

The songs on the EP were recorded in various sessions spanning about three decades.

The title track "Islands in the Sun" was offered by Jardine to the Beach Boys in the mid-1990s, during the sessions for Stars and Stripes Vol. 1 (1996) and around the time of the band's participation in Brian Wilson's mid-1990s sessions with Andy Paley. It was inspired by Harry Belafonte's similarly-titled song "Island in the Sun", Jardine's love of the Caribbean and calypso music, and the music of Bob Marley.^[2]^[1]^[3]

"My Plane Leaves Tomorrow (Au Revoir)", a duet with Neil Young, was recorded during sessions for A Postcard from California but was not included on the album when it was released in 2010. It was partly inspired by and adapted from the folk song "All My Trials". Flea contributes trumpet at the end of the song, performing an excerpt from the bugle call "Taps".^[3]

"Highway 101 (Rosarita Beach Caf(e))" is a rewrite of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's "Smokey Joe's Cafe", originally recorded by the R&B vocal group the Robins, some of whose members later formed the Coasters. Jardine received permission from Stoller to rewrite the lyrics and add additional music in the bridge. The Beach Boys had previously engaged in similar actions when Mike Love wrote new lyrics to Leiber and Stoller's "Riot in Cell Block #9", which was also originally recorded by the Robins and which was later associated with the Coasters as well. Love's partial lyrical rewrite was titled "Student Demonstration Time", recorded in 1970, and included on the band's album Surf's Up (1971). "Highway 101" features session musician Steve Douglas of The Wrecking Crew, a regular collaborator of the Beach Boys in the 1960s and 1970s, on tenor saxophone, including the saxophone solo; Douglas' solo would have been recorded before his death in 1993.^[3] It also features Michael Lent on lead guitar; according to David Beard, editor of the Beach Boys fan magazine Endless Summer Quarterly (ESQ), Lent was formerly Barry Manilow's guitarist for "over 25 years".^[3] The rhythm section consists of bassist Ed Carter and drummer Mike Kowalski, both of whom worked with the Beach Boys for decades. Carter is also the bassist and occasional lead guitarist in Jardine's Endless Summer Band.

"Crumple Car" was originally recorded (not by Jardine) for use in the surf film Big Wednesday (1978). Jardine re-arranged the song and provided additional lyrics and music, with permission, to complete the song to his liking. The song was introduced to Al Jardine by Ed Carter. (add about Chumash natives, ecology, climate, etc.)

Jardine performed the title track, "Highway 101", and "Crumple Car" for the first time live at a benefit concert on August 11, 2024, before the EP's release; for this concert, his backing band included the EP's co-producer/drummer Stevie Heger and fellow EP contributors Michael Lent, Shaun Elley, Paul Tarantino, and Kate Faber.^[4]

Brian Wilson died in his sleep in his Beverly Hills home on June 11, 2025, at the age of 82.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4] Al Jardine later reported that Wilson had been struggling with long-term effects of COVID-19 since his last tour: "That was the end of it. He never came back after that."^[5] His primary cause of death was declared as respiratory arrest amid sepsis, cystitis, and other associated factors.^[6]

Family and associates, including Jardine, Mike Love and Blondie Chaplin, paid tribute to Wilson on social media,^[7] while media outlets published eulogies written by Van Dyke Parks,^[8] Darian Sahanaja,^[9] and biographer David Leaf.^[10] Many other musicians, artists, and celebrities offered public acknowledgements.^[11]^[12]^{[nb 3]}

At the time of his death, Wilson had left behind a substantial body of unreleased work, including the albums Adult/Child and Sweet Insanity, a large collection of 1980s demos, and recordings created with Dennis Wilson, Gary Usher, Andy Paley, and Joe Thomas.^[16]

In May 2025, Al Jardine released a solo EP, Islands in the Sun, featuring guest appearances from Johnston (on the EP's title track), Neil Young, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea.^[17] During an interview with Variety that month, while promoting the EP and his tour with the Pet Sounds Band, Al Jardine announced the upcoming release of a box set, currently untitled and due for release in late 2025, which will include the unreleased 1977 album Adult/Child, alongside reissues of 15 Big Ones (1976), The Beach Boys Love You (1977), and M.I.U. Album (1978).^[17] Jardine's tour with most of Wilson's band, billed as "Al Jardine and The Pet Sounds Band,"^[18]^{[nb 4]} will partly promote the box set and includes shows in the United States^[17] and Australia.^[19] Jardine's tour with the Pet Sounds Band started in July 2025^[17]^[18] and was dedicated to Brian Wilson following his death on June 11, 2025.^[20]

Brian Wilson's manager, Jean Sievers, later confirmed a release for the Andy Paley sessions is in the works,^[21] but it is currently unclear if any songs with contributions from Brian's bandmates.

Cows in the Pasture, the unfinished album he had produced for Fred Vail in 1970, is to be released in 2025, accompanied by a docuseries about Vail and the album's making.^[22]
