There Will Be Brawl (synopsis)

There Will Be Brawl is a neo-noir web series created by Matthew Mercer, posted on The Escapist in 2009.

The Mushroom Kingdom has become a crime-ridden slum, following the massacre of Kirby the Cannibal eight years ago, imprisoned by the Super Mario Bros. A turf war has since begun between mob bosses Bowser, Ganondorf, King Dedede, and Mewtwo, with Princess Peach trying to keep rule over her kingdom. She frequently sleeps with both the alcoholic Mario, and drug dealing Luigi. A new serial killer named the Butcher begins disembowelling civilians, including Mewtwo. Peach goes to interrogate Kirby, but is kidnapped by the Butcher.

Luigi sets out to find Peach, assuming Bowser was responsible. Aided by former bounty hunter Samus Aran, and Mewtwo’s associate Red, Luigi goes to Tingle’s gay bar for leads, but Captain Falcon and Pit deny knowing Bowser’s location. Luigi is abducted by Donkey Kong, meeting Ganon. He offers information if Luigi delivers the Triforce to Captain Olimar, a deranged preacher in the slums. On the way, Luigi is caught in a fight between police officers Marth and Ike, and a gang led by Fox McCloud. Ike is mortally wounded, dying in hospital. Luigi meets Olimar, who claims the kingdom will be devoured by demons, crafting a bomb, which Luigi returns to Ganon.

Police Chief Link declares Princess Zelda as regent til Peace is found, declaring martial law. Ganon informs Luigi that Bowser and King Dedede are meeting at the latter’s brothel. Luigi speaks with Dedede, who agrees to bring about peace with the Super Mario Bros. Mario arrives at the brothel, beating Donkey Kong to death upon learning he is dating his ex-girlfriend Pauline. Luigi discovers Dedede has been murdered by the Butcher. A police raid led by Link’s agent Sheik occurs, prompting Luigi, Mario, Samus, and Pit to go underground. Alongside Red, the group confront informant Wario, who claims news anchorman Lakitu knows Bowser’s location. However, whilst interrogating Lakitu, Wario betrays the brothers to the police. Mario fends them off with Yoshi, but the others are arrested.

In custody, Luigi learns from Link that he arranged the meeting with Dedede, the raid unauthorised. Luigi interrogates Kirby, who ate his girlfriend Princess Daisy. Mario and Captain Falcon launch a jailbreak. Kirby escapes confinement, but is confronted by his guard Meta Knight. Luigi escapes with Falcon, Samus, Pit, and Red. Wario ceases the rioting, claiming Meta Knight incinerated Kirby, but has disappeared. Link, Zelda, and Wario retreat to the Nintendo and Hal Labs skyscraper to evade Mario’s intended civil war. Mario discovers Olimar is building a cult to bring about the Apocalypse, but Mario convinces the downtrodden citizens to instead take back their home. Returning home, Mario discovers Yoshi has been murdered by the Ice Climbers, Wario’s minions.

Luigi’s group encounter Ganon, who teleports Luigi to Bowser’s lair. Beforehand, Captain Falcon and Pit decide to flee the city. Bowser, now a Buddhist, reveals Ganon kidnapped Peach and controls the Butcher, hiding in the skyscrapers. Olimar’s demons turn out to be the collective Mr. Game & Watch, the oldest citizens in the kingdom. Bowser commits suicide when the Game & Watch attack. Red is assassinated using the bomb made for Ganon, given to him by Wario’s handicapped brother Waluigi.

Mario leads an army of civilians against Bowser’s forces. Game & Watch transforms into a gigantic octopus, skewering multiple characters including Olimar and Fox, but Mario destroys it. When Wario admits he murdered Red, he is killed by Red’s girlfriend Leaf, using a Jigglypuff. Zelda betrays Link, in a secret union with Ganon. A healed Link returns, asking Zelda to help rebuild the fallen Hyrule together, but Ganon murders them. Luigi discovers the Butcher keeps trophies of his victim’s bodies, including the dead Peach. The Butcher is revealed to be two boys, Ness and Lucas, who developed psychic powers under Mewtwo’s tutelage. Samus, Captain Falcon, and Pit arrive to fight the Butchers.

On the roof, Luigi discovers Kirby is alive, the true master of the Butchers, having driven Mewtwo into madness to create super soldiers. Kirby decapitates Ganon, and attempts to murder Luigi, but Luigi destroys the rooftop with a fireball. Luigi recovers in hospital, the surviving community coming together under the leadership of Marth as the new Police Chief.

Luigi receives a telephone call from Kirby, who congratulates him on conquering his demons, before hanging up with the implication he intends on eating Shigeru Miyamoto and Masahiro Sakurai.

Bob Chipman - The Game Overthinker

Bob “Moviebob” Chipman is an American film/video game critic, filmmaker, author, and internet personality, who hosts a number of online video shows. These include Escape To the Movies and The Big Picture, formerly for The Escapist, provided film reviews for Geek.com, movie-related news on Screen Rant, and independent productions In Bob We Trust and The Game Overthinker on his own YouTube channel and Screw Attack, though the latter was also produced for Screw Attack and The Escapist.

The Game Overthinker is hosted by Chipman, discussing, critiquing and providing analyses on the video game industry and community, often related to cultural behaviour, industrial decisions, history, and speculation on the medium’s future.

For the first forty-two episodes, Chipman posed as a “z-list internet celebrity”, using animated 8-bit and 16-bit video game characters to provide physical humour. The forty-third episode, “Double Trouble”, discussing evil twins in fiction, introduced episodic, satirical storylines, and several characters played by Chipman and his brother Chris, who serves as the show’s cameraman.

Chipman discovers that the fictional location of Wario's Woods exists in Minnesota. He is banished there by the Anti-Thinker, his evil counterpart from the “Anti-Verse”, who takes over his role as host of the show. The Anti-Thinker parodies internet trolls, portrayed as an unintelligent, jock version of Chipman, sporting a white Tapout t-shirt and a baseball cap. The Anti-Thinker spends several episodes insulting Chipman’s gaming preferences and lifestyle.

Chipman survives in the forest for three months, managing to continue his show whilst training to defeat the Anti-Thinker. He is accompanied briefly by Straw Man, a literal animated haystack, who complains about the show’s new aesthetic. Irritated, Chipman executes him. He locates a mystical tower, where he is taught to harness superhuman powers. The Anti-Thinker is instructed by his master, the Ultrathinker, to eliminate Chipman. Chipman and the Anti-Thinker battle in Wario’s Woods. The Anti-Thinker reveals his true appearance is that of a skull-faced humanoid with sickles for hands. Though mortally wounded, Chipman is revived by Princess Rosalina, defeating the Anti-Thinker with a Fire Flower.

Chipman discovers video game characters, referred to as “Vidspawn”, are materialising in the real world. He finds allies in Police Commissioner John “Bunnyface” Bonifacio, played by Chris’ pet rabbit Dylan through recycled footage; Jack Lieberson, a ninja who becomes a US Senator, parodying Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and US Senator Joe Lieberman; and Ivan, a sardonic fairy intern, who references Navi. Chipman continues his show, battling and disposing of the Vidspawn.

Two elemental ninjas, Pyrothinker and Cryothinker, launch arson attacks on several local Boston video game stores and arcades. In a confrontation, Chipman discovers they are the sons of the late Straw Man, and can be defeated with a weapon made of anti-metal. He melts down the Anti-Thinker’s necklace, forging the Omega Sword, which he uses to slay the ninjas. They leave behind two elemental stones of fire and water.

The third story arc introduced the Retrothinker, an optimistic television host from the 1980s who resembles Chipman, but wears a yellow t-shirt and a red newsboy cap. He placed himself in cryostasis to awaken in 2025 to experience a world of advanced technology and a continued golden age of video games. Awakening early, Retrothinker becomes disillusioned by the modern world and video game market. He is transformed into the evil Necrothinker by the Ultrathinker using an earth elemental stone, building an army of undead gaming characters to destroy modern video game companies. Chipman is able to defeat and restore Retrothinker using the other two elemental stones. Retrothinker joins Chipman in hosting the show, providing additional opinions and humour.

The Anti-Thinker briefly returns, though his attempt to murder Chipman is thwarted by the Omegathinker, a character from the far future, portrayed by Chipman wearing a pink wig and a denim jacket, referencing the Dragon Ball character Trunks and Kyle Reese. Introduced as Chipman’s descendant, the Omegathinker hails from a timeline where humanity was wiped out by the Robothinker, a parody of the Terminator, depicted as an evolved UAV, empowered by an air elemental stone, inspired by the vocabulary and competitive style of Xbox Live players.

The Devil, going by the alias of “Mr. Phibb”, is introduced, played by Chipman in a red suit. He resurrects Pyrothinker and Cryothinker after being insulted by Chipman's characters. Chipman and his allies are aided by Robothinker’s creator Dr. Beardo, played by Chipman sporting a fake beard and speking with a Scottish accent. Beardo uses a teleporter to remove the air elemental stone from Robothinker’s chassis. The ninjas are teleported into Chipman’s home, but the transitions fuses them together into the Plasmathinker, though this process is reversed offscreen later in the story. Robothinker is destroyed by Omegathinker, whilst the Necrothinker, who Retrothinker briefly transformed into to fight, is erased from existence.

Retrothinker is arrested by Bunnyface and Lieberson when it becomes clear he was the Necrothinker, whilst Chipman and Ivan are placed under house arrest. Lieberson frees Pyrothinker and Cryothinker, founding the political “Oolong Tea Party” in the call to video game censorship.

The final arc, “Second Quest: Legend of the Lost Cross”, occurs between the eighty-sixth and hundredth episodes. Chipman remains under house arrest, guarded by bionic guards called J.I.S.M., founded by Lieberson. The Anti-Thinker returns again, rescuing Retrothinker, before hiding in Chipman’s house. The Anti-Thinker explains that the Ultrathinker has been manipulating the events of the series’ storyline, destroying the Anti-Verse. In an elaborate plan, the Ultrathinker plots to destroy video games and Earth. Wario’s Woods serves as a weak point between realms, from which the Vidspawn are appearing. The breach can be sealed using an ultimate weapon and an item referred to as the “Lost Cross".

Chipman, the Anti-Thinker, and Dr. Beardo spelunk into Mount Karnov, finding a carving of Link’s shield. Retrothinker realises the Lost Cross is from Link’s shield, specifically its design from the original The Legend of Zelda. Dr. Beardo then locates the Lost Cross within the trunk of his car. Retrothinker travels to the tower in Wario’s Woods, encountering the Old Man from Zelda, who reveals the ultimate weapon is not the Master Sword as theorised, but the Golden Axe.

Chipman is abducted by the Ultrathinker, who appears as a malevolent hooded figure. He reveals himself to be a gigantic primate, a former MIT test animal who gained increased intelligence through experiments with electro-video technology. Launched into space, the Ultrathinker was exposed to cosmic radiation, transcending to a high state of existence. He returned to Earth, enraged to see the technology he helped develop was used to create video games. Using psychic powers and social manipulation, he orchestrated the Video game crash of 1983, Sega’s departure from the console market, and influenced politicians and censors to view games as causes for violence.

Senator Lieberson admits he is the Ultrathinker’s minion, actually Dr. Beardo in disguise. Beardo has been manipulating events to acquire the Golden Axe, wielding the Master Sword, the axe’s twin. Both the Omegathinker and Robothinker return, leading to a battle outside Dr. Beardo’s house to rescue the imprisoned Bunnyface. Omegathinker and most of the antagonists are killed.

Chipman is saved by the Omegathinker’s spirit, who sends him to meet the Captain, a semi-non-corporeal character based on Captain N: The Game Master. Chipman and the Captain discuss Gamergate, its causes and impact on the gaming community. The Captain passes his cosmic powers to Chipman so he may take on a higher form as the Game Overthinker. Chipman passes on the Captain’s powers to Retrothinker, destroying the Ultrathinker. The Anti-Thinker and Retrothinker adopt new names of “Bro’seph” and “Throwback”, whilst Chipman ends the series as an ethereal “Thinker”.

The Game Overthinker was restructured to focus primarily on Chipman’s commentary, continuing as episodes of In Bob We Trust on his YouTube channel. When the series was introduced to The Escapist, Chipman retired the satirical plotlines and characters to exclusively focus on his analyses.
