History
OneTrust was founded in 2016 by Kabir Barday in Atlanta, Georgia. The company initially focused on helping organizations comply with privacy laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).[7]
The company later expanded into security, risk management, and ESG compliance through acquisitions and partnerships. In 2022, it laid off about 950 employees—approximately 25 % of its workforce—citing market conditions.[8]
AI capabilities and governance
In 2025, OneTrust launched the Privacy Breach Response Agent, built with Microsoft Security Copilot, designed to automate incident evaluation and breach notification mapping.[9] The company also integrated with Azure OpenAI to support compliance transparency and model governance functions.[10] In 2024, AI-based features were added to the DataGuidance regulatory research platform, enabling regulatory text search and summarization.[11]
