History
Arango House was commissioned in 1970 by Jerónimo Arango, a Mexican businessman, as a weekend house for his family. He had read reports about Lautners Elrod House built in 1968 and wanted a holiday home built by Lautner as architect and Arthur Elrod as interior designer. Helena Arahuete, a Belgian who had been hired by Lautner's company a while before, participated in the design of the house. Today Arango House is owned by the Arango family.
Design
As a number of other houses built by Lautner, Arango House is classified as organic architecture, an architectural style established by Frank Lloyd Wright. The two-storey building is built upon a steeply sloping, 2300 m² property above the bay of Acapulco. From street level a driveway winds down the hill, takes a 180 degree turn and ends in a carport under a semicircular roof that traverses the entire building. The monumental bronze entrance door was designed by Mathias Goeritz. The "living room" (which constitutes the entire upper floor) is in fact a huge terrace, open to all sides and providing a view over the bay of Acapulco. WEITERMACHEN
