Karl Martin Weschke (/ˈvɛʃkə/ VESH-kə; 7 June 1925 – 20 February 2005) was a German-born British modernist painter and sculptor.

Early life and career
Weschke was born in 1925 in Taubenpreskeln, a small town near Gera in Thuringia, Germany.[a] One of three illegitimate children, he was placed in a children's home by his mother, Elsa Emma Weschke, at age two; she reclaimed him five years later.[1]
During his teens, he began drawing and carving after being encouraged by Fritz Dix – brother of expressionist painter Otto Dix – , a resident of Gera. He left school at 14. Waschke later became a member of the Hitler Youth and joined the Luftwaffe at 17. At the end of World War II, he was captured in the Netherlands by the Allies and sent to the UK as a prisoner of war.
