Description of list

Source

Data are taken from the database of municipalities of the Ministère des Affaires régionales et municipales.

Types of municipality included in list

The type of municipality is indicated by a code. These are CT — Township municipality, CU — Municipality of united townships, M — Municipality (not otherwise specified), P — Parish municipality, V — City, VL — Village. For further information on the classification of municipalities and Aboriginal lands, please refer to Types of municipalities in Quebec.

Unorganized territories not included

Currently, unorganized territories (NO) are not included in the list.

Aboriginal lands not included

Currently, Aboriginal lands (classifications RI — Indian Reserve, TC — Land reserved for the Cree, TI — Category I land reserved for the Inuit, TK — Land reserved for the Naskapi, VC — Cree village, VK — Naskapi village, VN — Northern village) are not included. Data for Indian settlements (EI) are included in the statistics for the municipalities in which they are situated (or the Indian settlement may be in an unorganized territory, not included here).[1]

For these communities, see the articles List of Indian reserves in Quebec (all RI), Kativik Regional Government (all TI, VK, VN), Jamésie (all TC, VC) and Kawawachikamach, Quebec (lone TK). (Jamésie also has five non-Aboriginal municipalities, listed below with codes in the 99000 range.)

Code

This is the code attributed to each municipality by the Institut de la Statistique du Québec.[2] The first two digits identify the census division, and, in most cases, the regional county municipality to which the municipality belongs.

Area and population

These are taken from the data of the Ministère des Affaires régionales et municipales.[3]

Note that in a some cases municipality boundaries may differ from census subdivisions.

Regional county municipality (RCM)

If a municipality legally belongs to a regional county municipality (RCM), its name is given. Currently, the table contains no information on the manner in which those municipalities not belonging to an RCM are grouped for statistical purposes, other than what can be deduced from the first two digits of their codes. See Regional county municipality#RCMs as geographical units for more information.

Other

This column indicates whether a municipality belongs to the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal or the Communauté métropolitaine de Québec. In the event the municipality does, the metropolitan community exercises with respect to the municipality some of the powers ordinarily exercised by RCMs. See Administrative subdivisions of Quebec#Metropolitan communities for further information.

Region

This is the administrative region to which the municipality belongs.
