Early life and education

Cuming studied medicine at Newnham College, University of Cambridge and Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, qualifying in 1994. She completed her surgical training in Brighton and then through the North East Thames National Training Programme. She holds a Master's degree in Surgical Education from Imperial College London and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.[2]

Career

Cuming became a consultant surgeon at Homerton University Hospital in 2013. She leads the Homerton Anogenital Neoplasia Service (HANS)[4], which is the UK's largest service for the diagnosis and treatment of anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) using high-resolution anoscopy (HRA).

She served as Chair of the Women in Surgery Forum at the Royal College of Surgeons of England from 2021 to 2024. She is currently President of the International Anal Neoplasia Society, and Co-chair of the Working Party on Sexual Misconduct in Surgery.[5][6] In 2025 she received a National Clinical Impact Award from the Advisory Committee on Clinical Impact Awards.[7]

Sexual misconduct in surgery

Cuming was a co-author of the 2023 report "Breaking the Silence: Addressing Sexual Misconduct in Healthcare", published by the Working Party on Sexual Misconduct in Surgery.[8], found that 63% of female surgeons reported experiencing sexual harassment from colleagues and 30% reported sexual assault. Cuming described the findings as representing a "MeToo moment for surgery" in an opinion piece for The Times[9] and in an interview on the BBC Radio program Woman's Hour.[10]

Redraw the Balance

In 2016, Cuming appeared in "Redraw the Balance", a viral video produced by the charity Inspiring the Future. In the video, children aged 5–7 were asked to draw a firefighter, surgeon, and fighter pilot; 61 of the 66 drawings depicted men. Cuming then revealed herself to the children as a working surgeon. The video has received over 100 million views[11] and has been recreated in Denmark, China, Canada, and South Africa. It has been referenced by UN Women, the OECD, UNESCO, and the World Economic Forum.
