There are no completely legitimate uses for any generative AI. Use your own intelligence.

It's hurting the planet. And it's hurting literacy. The written word is one of the greatest creations in human history, it demarcates human history.
And on Wikipedia?
Wikipedia, for editors, focuses on community in the act of creation. It feels anti-community to have an AI generate content for Wikipedia, whether one tries to dissect its output or not.
Users defending gen AI focus on how it saves them time. If you want to create an online encyclopaedia in no time, sure, you can ask a chatbot to write one for you.
But that feels inherently anti- the spirit of Wikipedia, a place where for over two decades people have researched and discussed. I do not know how someone can have edited Wikipedia for any length of time and be now more concerned with quantity than quality. With speed of article production than with discovering a subject for themselves to create accurate and balanced coverage. If someone does not value that act of creation, the baseline default of editing, they surely would not regularly edit Wikipedia.
The fundamentals of creating a Wikipedia article, in judging and balancing information and sources to aim for an appropriate reflection, in utilising the community-minded editing approach to get closer and closer to this, are all incredibly important in that act of creation. They're also incredibly respectful of information handling, of subjects being covered, of the process of writing. Gen AI is none of these things. Wikipedia not only does not need a production line to churn out standard articles, but such a thing would also go against fundamentals of creating appropriate coverage on a per-case basis.
It is human to seek to share knowledge. If you want to share knowledge, do not let a flashy gen AI steal the opportunity from you. Don't just skip to the end of the process, without getting to work on that knowledge yourself. If you feel your own abilities are not up to the task of article creation, this only means you will feel even more satisfied when you have developed them and can.
(And even assuming someone knows enough to make sure gen AI-produced content is totally fair and accurate (then why are they using it?), gen AIs have an awful habit of writing things like a stereotypical American high school argumentative essay, both over-explained and under-explained (i.e. waffle) at the same time. This is bad.)
