User:Mackensen/Yellow Card
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The community gives a yellow card to a user when it finds their conduct is subpar in some way. This is a warning with no actual sanction, and is based on the yellow card in association football. If the user who receives the yellow card re-offends in the next six months, this will likely lead to appropriate sanctions, such as a topic ban or block.

Rationale
Discussions at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents (ANI) can get derailed because people disagree on whether there's a problem, or agree that there's a problem but can't agree on a remedy. The purpose of the yellow card is to address situations where someone's conduct is subpar, but not so egregious that the remedy is obvious. With a yellow card the community is telling someone that you made a mistake, you're on notice that you handled this poorly, and if this comes up again something will actually be done about it. Repeated misconduct after a warning is easier to understand as a problem needing a remedy. From the recipient's perspective, it's good to receive feedback before getting sanctioned.
