Inappropiate external links

November 2007

Papiamento/Papiamentu/Papiament

Saw your change to Curacao, and wanted to chat for a bit before I started reverting. Here on Bonaire, the locals speak Papiament. They tell me that Arubans speak Papiamento, and Curacaoans speak Papiamentu. They assign a different name to each dialect. What source do you have that shows "Papiamentu" as a non-English form of "Papiamento"?Kww (talk) 15:09, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

I agree that mixing forms is a bit off. My preference would be to use "Papiamentu" throughout the Curacao article and "Papiamento" throughout the Aruba article. In the Bonaire article I use "Papiamentu" because that's how I generally see it written here, even though the locals say "Papiament" when they talk.Kww (talk) 15:51, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

January 2008

Planet Earth

It's slightly confusing because both were featured in the same episode: the wolves pursued caribou and the hunting dogs chased the impala. David Attenborough specifically refers to the latter as African hunting dogs and the former as wolves. Chris 42 (talk) 20:06, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Unless of course you are referring to the American version, which is edited differently, and I haven't seen. If you look at the summary for the first episode, you will see that both sequences are mentioned. The Gray Wolf article states that the animals are also known simply as wolves. :-) Chris 42 (talk) 20:08, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Infoboxes

I just tought you should know that not all the infoboxes recognize a nationality parameter, for example the one on Roberto Clemente and Ricky Martin don't display this information, maybe the nationality should be placed in the prose in these cases. - Caribbean~H.Q. 22:00, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

To avoid any trouble I would recommend gaining a general consensus on the subject first, otherwise the discussions will be taking place on several pages, Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (infoboxes) is probably the best place to establish said consensus. - Caribbean~H.Q. 20:16, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

A mention of this has been made Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (infoboxes)#Infobox Actor directing editors to Template talk:Infobox actor#Nationality about adding a Nationality parameter. Image copyright problem with Image:White paw print.svg

It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

Uploading media

{{helpme}} Can anyone please explain the advantages or disadvantages on uploading images (and other media) to Wikimedia Commons? Is all media being transferred to Wikimedia? I get confused with all these different projects from the Wikimedia Foundation. It seems that images are all scattered between Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikisource. Wouldn't it be better to have all in one place? I'd like to know what you guys think the best practice is. ~RayLast ^«Talk!» 14:14, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

The commons is a central media repository and is only for free media; that is, media in the pubic domain or released under a free license such as the GFDL. Any image uploaded to the Commons can be used on any Wikimedia project directly, using normal image markup. By contrast, an image uploaded locally, to Wikipedia, is not directly accessible by other projects and would have to be separately uploaded. For this reason it is much preferred that if an image is free it be uploaded to the commons, rather than here. non-free images can only be used if they contain proper fair use rationales under fair use law, which is quite strict. None-free media is not allowed at the Commons.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:24, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Is there a way to seamlessly transfer my free self-created images to Commons from Wikipedia with all their tags and stuff? Or do I have to go through the deletion request at Wikipedia and uploading again at Commons? ~RayLast ^«Talk!» 15:33, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

It's not as seamless as would be ideal, but there are tools to help you with a lot of it. Take a look at Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons for some information. —Bkell (talk) 16:19, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

^{(Edit conflict)}You can use Commonist, a tool that lets you upload multiple versions at once. The local versions here will have to be deleted, but I think Commonist might do that for you (it won't delete them, but will tag them for deletion) - if not, you can mark the local versions with {{NowCommons}} after you've finished the transfer. Suggestion

{{helpme}} I'd like to know where and to whom I can submit a suggestion, which would be a pretty big overhaul of the user talk pages system used by Wikipedia. I have noticed that users always struggle with this when commenting and replying in user talk pages. When someone leaves a comment, do you reply on their talk page or on your own? If you do it on your own, will they see the reply? Have they set your talk page for watching? The result of this is almost always having half a conversation on one page and the other half on another page. Sometimes they even duplicate messages on both talk pages.

My suggestion is to have each comment section in a type of "template" in some Wikipedia Comments database, while only adding tags to all user talk pages of those who have participated (left a comment) in the section. Whenever someone edits the comment, they can do it on their own talk page, and even when it seems thay are editing their talk page, they are actually editing the template, so the changes will appear in all pages who have the tag. This way the full conversation will be visible in all user talk pages, and will never be duplicated. Every comment would have an ID (e.g. 00215468) and its template page has everything including the title, all messages and a list of all users who have commented on the section. When a user chooses to add a section to any user talk page nothing will be apparently different since the interface would remain the same, but they will be creating or editing a "template" without openly realizing it.

An example tag that would be included in user talk pages could be something like this:

{{Comment:00215468|title=Suggestion}}

Everytime the comment is edited, all users listed for the comment will receive the "new message" notice.

This would not apply for article discussion pages since it is better to keep those attached to their articles like they are now.
