Arved Raudkivi (14 March 1923 Paatsalu Parish, Varbla Parish, Lääne County[1]12 September 2022 Howick, New Zealand[2][3]) was an Estonian-born New Zealand engineer and academic.

Biography

He was born in the village of Mereäärse at Parika farm. He studied at Nõmme and Vatla 6-grade primary schools, and at the Gustav Adolf Grammar School in Tallinn, graduating in 1943. He completed studies at the Tallinn Technical Secondary School and attended the Tallinn University of Technology.

In 1944, Raudkivi fled to Germany, where he graduated from the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1949 and married Aino, a fellow Estonian. They emigrated to New Zealand together in 1950. There, he worked for five years at the Ministry of Works on the planning and construction of hydroelectric power stations.

From 1956, Raudkivi worked at the University of Auckland as a professor of hydromechanics and hydraulic engineering until being named professor emeritus in 1986.

He lectured in many countries, including extended lecture courses in Germany, Argentina, and India. He served as a technical project consultant in New Zealand, Samoa, Fiji, Rarotonga, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea. After 1986, he spent a year as a visiting professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig and in Singapore.

In 1988, he was invited to the state of Schleswig-Holstein to lead coastal protection research, a position he held until 1994. Between 1995 and 2000, he advised Germany's participation in the European Union Marine Science and Technology programme. During these 13 years, he lived in Germany for approximately nine months of each year. From 2000 to 2010, he worked as a technical advisor in New Zealand.

Arved Raudkivi has three children.
