The company operates a fully online platform for quoting, purchasing and managing policies. NEXT serves many different industries, including construction, hospitality, retail and professional services.
In March 2025, NEXT Insurance was acquired by ERGO Group AG, the primary insurance arm of Munich Re.[1] ERGO is headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany. NEXT maintains additional offices in Rochester, Waltham, Massachusetts and Kfar Saba, Israel.[2]
history
NEXT Insurance was founded in 2016 by Guy Goldstein, Nissim Tapiro, and Alon Huri with the goal of simplifying the process of purchasing business insurance for small enterprises and self-employed professionals.
The founders, who previously worked together at Check,[3] a mobile payment company acquired by Intuit,[4] sought to create a digital-first insurance platform that could offer fast and customized coverage options.
In its early years, NEXT focused on securing strategic partnerships and raising venture capital to scale its operations. Following a $250 million Series D funding round in September 2020, NEXT reached a valuation of $2 billion, earning it “unicorn” status.[5] The milestone positioned NEXT as a prominent player in the insurtech sector focused on small business coverage. Between 2017 and 2024, the company raised more than $1.1 billion in funding from investors including Munich Re, CapitalG, Redpoint Ventures, Battery Ventures, and more.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12]
In 2020, NEXT launched its first national branding campaign, “Built by Business,” reallocating over $250,000 toward commissioning approximately 50 small business owners to contribute creative work as part of the campaign, showcasing entrepreneurs and reinforcing the company’s commitment to supporting the small business community during the COVID‑19 pandemic.[13][14]
NEXT completed its first-ever acquisition in December 2020 by acquiring Juniper Labs, a Denver-based startup specializing in open data and machine learning underwriting technology.[15]
In March 2021, NEXT acquired AP Intego,[16] a digital insurance agency specializing in pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation coverage. The deal added roughly 160 employees and expanded NEXT’s workforce to nearly 600 across four offices.[17]
In the next few months, the company launched a creative marketing campaign aimed at demystifying insurance terminology for small business owners. The initiative reimagined commonly confusing policy terms as humorous blockbuster-style film posters, with the goal of simplifying industry jargon.[18]
In mid‑2021, NEXT underwent a strategic rebrand to reinforce its commitment to small businesses and redefine its visual identity.[19] The refreshed branding included an updated logo, redesigned website, and new advertising campaign under the unified theme “Get NEXT. Get Going.” The campaign was described in industry coverage as aiming to simplify business insurance and make copy more approachable for entrepreneurs, signaling NEXT’s shift toward clearer messaging and stronger brand recognition.[20]
In July 2025, NEXT Insurance was fully acquired by ERGO Group AG,[21][22][23][24] the primary insurance subsidiary of Munich Re, in a transaction valued at $2.6 billion.[25] The acquisition marked ERGO’s expanded commitment to the digital small business insurance market in the U.S.[26]
Strategic Partnerships
In October 2020, NEXT initiated its embedded insurance strategy by integrating with Intuit QuickBooks, enabling small-business users to obtain quotes and purchase policies directly within their accounting platform.[27]
NEXT teamed up with Amazon Business Prime in March 2021 to offer its digital insurance products to Prime members, often featuring promotional pricing.[28]
In February 2023, NEXT expanded its embedded offerings through a partnership with LegalZoom, integrating its NEXT Connect platform. LegalZoom users could get insurance quotes and purchase coverage directly.[29] Building on this, in May 2024, NEXT rolled out a new solution in partnership with LegalZoom that delivers tailored quotes in as little as ten seconds, leveraging LegalZoom’s customer data to streamline the experience.[30]
In June 2023, NEXT deepened its embedded insurance focus with Gusto Embedded, making its pay-as-you-go workers’ compensation policies accessible directly within Gusto’s payroll platform.[31]
Products and Services
NEXT Insurance offers a suite of business insurance products tailored for small businesses and self-employed professionals, including general liability, professional liability, commercial property, commercial auto, workers’ compensation, tools & equipment coverage (inland marine), and business owner’s policies (BOPs).[citation needed]
The company operates through a fully digital platform, allowing customers to obtain quotes, purchase coverage, download certificates of insurance (COIs), and manage claims entirely online or through its mobile app. Policies are typically customizable and can be issued digitally without requiring agent assistance.[32]
A key feature of NEXT’s suite is NEXT Connect, an embedded insurance solution introduced in 2021 that allows partners in payroll, accounting, point-of-sale (POS), e-commerce, and banking ecosystems to offer insurance directly within their platforms.[33]
