Critics of the degrowth argue degrowth is a vague concept that fails to offer an effective strategy for reducing environmental harm, ignores rebound effects, and has little social or political support, whereas price incentives through environmental taxes or tradable permits are much more effective.[1] Critics also note that far-reaching degrowth scenarios are projected to increase poverty, with no historical precedent for the poorest benefiting in a shrinking economy.[2] A 2024 systematic review found that most degrowth studies are opinion pieces, while the remainder often fail to meet accepted standards for good research.[3]
Alternatives to degrowth include green growth (where economic growth and sustainability are deemed compatible) and agrowth (an agnostic attitude towards growth that focuses on reducing environmental damage through effective instruments, regardless of whether the economy is growing, stagnant, or contracting).[4][5]
