The discography of The Smashing Pumpkins, an American alternative rock band, consists of eight studio albums, four live albums, one digital live album series, seven compilation albums (including box sets and promotional releases), five extended plays (including promotional releases), 38 singles (including promotional releases), four video albums, 23 music videos and contributions to five soundtrack albums. This list does not include material recorded by The Smashing Pumpkins members with other side projects.
The Smashing Pumpkins was formed in 1988 by guitarist and singer Billy Corgan and guitarist James Iha in Chicago, Illinois. The band would soon be completed that year with the addition of members D'Arcy Wretzky (bass) and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums). The band made their debut appearance on record in 1989 with their contribution of two songs, "Sun" and "My Dahlia", on the compilation album Light into Dark on independent label Halo Records. In 1990, the band would release their first single, "I Am One" on Limited Potential Records, followed up later that year with the single "Tristessa" on Sub Pop Records. The two songs would be re-recorded and included on the band's debut full-length album, Gish, released in 1991 on Caroline Records a subsidiary label of Virgin Records. The album breached the Billboard 200 peaking at number 195, and sold 100,000 copies in less than a year, exceeding the expectations of the indie label. It was certified gold in America in 1994 and awarded platinum certification by 1999.
In 1993, the band released their first major label album Siamese Dream on Virgin Records. It reached number 10 on the Billboard 200, number 4 on the UK Albums Chart and number 3 in New Zealand. By the end of the year it was certified platinum in America, and certified four times multi-platinum in 1996. It has also been certified four times multi-platinum in Canada and gold in UK. The album spawned four singles, "Cherub Rock", "Today", "Disarm" and "Rocket", which enjoyed some mainstream success. Of particular note, "Today" gave The Smashing Pumpkins their highest charting single at the time of its release, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. In 1994, a compilation of B-side and rarities, entitled Pisces Iscariot was released, charting even higher than Siamese Dream, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and number 2 in New Zealand. Later that year, it would be awarded platinum certification. In the same year, a VHS cassette called Vieuphoria was released, containing a mixture of various live performances, short films and featurettes. A soundtrack of the video was released as a promotional CD, re-titled Earphoria. Vieuphoria would be re-released in 2002 on DVD simultaniously with the commercial release of Earphoria.
The band followed up Siamese Dream with the release of the double-album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness in 1995. It peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, Australia album chart, New Zealand album chart and Sweden album chart, and would eventually be certified nine times multi-platinum in America, diamond in Canada and platinum in UK. The album spawned five singles, "Bullet with Butterfly Wings", "1979", "Zero", "Tonight, Tonight", and "Thirty-Three". "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" was the band's first single to chart in the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 22, also reaching number 2 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. "1979" became the band's highest charting single to date, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the band's first and only single to date to reach number 1 on the Alternative Songs chart. Both "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and "1979" have been awarded gold certification in America.
