Many cities have a statue of Mercator. Rupelmonde, Duisburg, Brussels, Louvain.[citation needed] His name has been attached to ships,[1][citation needed] buildings, universities,[2][citation needed] insurance companies, small businesses, pizzerias, streets, schools and more. There is a Belgian bank note. There is a German coin and incorrect postage stamp (showing a construction which is not the Mercator Projection).[3][citation needed] He has been modelled in sand and giant figures.[4][citation needed] There is a venomous snail and a beetle.[5][citation needed] An asteroid is named for him. He was also the subject of a Google Doodle on his 503rd Birthday.[6]
