His first contact with Cambodia came in 1994, when as the MD of Euromill Engineering Co., Ltd., he donated steel structures for the first two Don Bosco vocational schools in Phnom Penh in 1994 and a second in Sihanoukville in 1996.[1]
Career
Netherlands and Thailand (1990–2008)
Brongers began his career at Fokker Aircraft, moving to Heidelberg Printing Presses following Fokker's bankruptcy. He arrived in Thailand in 1994 as Managing Director of Euromill Engineering, subsequently joining Thai Scandic Steel and then Topaz Inc as CFO — at the time the last Thai company listed on the American Stock Exchange.[2]
Kingdom Breweries (2009–2011)
In 2009, Brongers moved to Cambodia to found Kingdom Breweries in Phnom Penh, backed by Leopard Capital, converting a former Nestlé plant on the Tonlé Sap riverfront into a microbrewery.[3] The flagship Clouded Leopard Pilsener launched in September 2010, was featured in Time magazine,[4] and won a Monde Sélection Gold Quality Award in 2011. Brongers stepped down as CEO late 2011.[5]
Royal Group of Companies (2012–2018)
Brongers joined the Royal Group of Companies as Senior Executive Vice President for Business Development, where he in 2012 started BMW Cambodia as CEO and concurrently served as Executive Director of KFC Cambodia.[6] As President of the Cambodia Automotive Industry Federation (CAIF) during this period, he was a regular commentator in the Cambodian press on vehicle import policy and road infrastructure.[7][8][9][10][11] Royal Group sold BMW Cambodia in 2018 to HGB.
HGB and advisory work (2018–2021)
Following the sale of BMW Cambodia, Brongers joined HGB Group as CEO for its FMCG and restaurant portfolio, overseeing brands including Ajisen Ramen, Little Sheep and Häagen-Dazs Cambodia as well as Shell Oil.[12] He subsequently joined Kylla Group as a regional adviser on mergers, acquisitions, and financing for Southeast Asia.
Arts administration and S.E.A. Ocean Gallery (2021–present)
As Secretary General of the Art for Kep Foundation, established with the support of Cambodia's Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Education, Brongers oversees artist residency programmes in Kep Province. The foundation's flagship project is the S.E.A. Ocean Gallery (Southeast-Asian Oceanic Gallery of Kep), conceived as Asia's first permanent underwater art museum, combining 3D-printed sculptures designed by international artists to function as both artworks and artificial coral reefs, developed in partnership with Marine Conservation Cambodia, Zaha Hadid Architects and Sotheby's.[13] Brongers is also enrolled in a Doctor of Business Administration programme at Paragon International University in Phnom Penh.[14]
Industry and civic roles
Brongers has served as President of the Dutch-Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of the Cambodian Tourism Federation and President of the Cambodia Automotive Industry Federation. He currently is the founding chairman of the Royal Cambodia Yacht Club, and head of the Cambodian chapter of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs.[15] He is a member of Loge Erasmus No. 297 in Bangkok, under the Grand Orient of the Netherlands.
