Kairos Futura

Kairos Futura is an organization based in Nairobi,Kenya founded in 2021. The organization addresses ecological inequalities in Nairobi to bring nature and creative interventions to underserved urban communities..[1] In 2024,they presented the exhibition Hakuna Utopia which discussed the collective’s approach to themes of the future and urban imagination.[2] The Organization also collaborates with scientists and designers in Nairobi on community-driven water quality and ecological initiatives on how artistic and scientific approaches can be combined to explore solutions for contaminated urban waterways. [3]

History

Wild future lab The lab, helps imagine how people can live with nature and not apart from it. The future lab has interactive experiences that invite visitors to create their own visions. The project supports grassroots groups and shows how collective creativity can help people reimagine the future of their cities as it raises awareness around ecological challenges in Kenya.It has been featured exploring ecological futures and rewilding concepts. Imagination Station The mobile lab is said to travel across Nairobi and remote Kenyan communities as an interactive installation enabling participants to imagine rewilded futures, create Prototypes and come up with solutions using locally available materials, as well as art and design tools which the mobile studio makes available. The project was described in Nairobi, which showcased its approach to rewilding and community engagement. [5]

Hakuna Utopia is a name the Organization started using while working on an exhibition on Lamu Island in Southern Kenya in 2021.While there, they became interested in the visuals and language of utopia and apocalypse, and how landscapes with these identities could often exist side by side.The Organizations work has been featured in cultural publications that discuss its approach to utopian and dystopian futures in art and design. [6] The exhibition Hakuna Utopia? challenged conventional ideas of utopia and was discussed in art publications [7] In 2024,the organizations exhibition Hakuna Utopia in Nairobi also explored themes of utopia and resilience in response to the city’s social and ecological challenges. Organizational Structure

Nairobi Space Station The Nairobi Space Station highlighted the project’s artist‑led approach to social and environmental challenges. It was also was discussed in initiatives like Space Station Africa, highlighting the collective’s engagement with sustainable art and ecological themes in Nairobi. [9] Kairos Futura’s Nairobi Space Station brought together artists and community members to rewild urban spaces, combining art, environmental action, and social engagement. [10]

Lamu Space Station is a nomadic initiative about community activism were diferent kind of actions contribute to improve a harmonious relationship with nature.The Lamu Space Station, which was launched on 22nd January 2022, is an interactive futuristic installation concept that challenges a modern space imagination story about the future. [11] The Station has highlighted its visual and cultural impact in Kenya. [12]

Aspen Space Station The Project has been covered and highlighted about its artistic engagement with concepts of space exploration and environment to educate people that earth was still worth saving and keeping it alive. [13] The station is located in the backside of Aspen Mountain, an art exhibit that questions how space travel relates to the human race’s response to climate change. Art installations with themes have been covered talking about the project’s engagement with cultural notions of space and environment. [14]

Awards

The organization has received local and international recognition for its work in speculative design and futures engauging artistic practice.In 2025, Kairos Futura’s Wild Future Lab project won the Grand Prize at the S+T+ARTS Prize Africa, showcasing its engagement with ecological futures and creative practice in Nairobi. [15]
