^a Ireland was knocked out of the list due to a humorous news piece titled "It’s official: Ireland is a Third World country", which was published on 21 August 2012 by Irish online news website TheJournal.ie. If we were to remove all results related to that news article, Ireland would be listed at #23, just above Slovakia.

To calculate which countries are perceived by the English-speaking world as being developed, five queries were submitted to the Google search engine:

1. "${\displaystyle x}$ is|being a very|highly developed country|nation|state|economy|market"|"${\displaystyle x}$ has been a developed country|nation|state|economy"
2. "${\displaystyle x}$ is|being a developed country|nation|state|economy|market"|"${\displaystyle x}$ is|being a first|1st world country|nation|state|economy|market"
3. "${\displaystyle x}$ is not a developing country|nation|state|economy|market"|"${\displaystyle x}$ is not a third|3rd world country|nation|state|economy|market"
4. "${\displaystyle x}$ is|being a|an developing|undeveloped|failed|poor|impoverished|destitute country|nation|state|economy|market"|"${\displaystyle x}$ is a third|3rd world country|nation|state|economy|market"
5. "${\displaystyle x}$ is not a developed country|nation|state|economy|market"|"${\displaystyle x}$ is not a first|1st world country|nation|state|economy|market"

If the results of the first three queries outnumbered the results of the latter two, the country was considered "developed."

Alternative names were also used for some countries (e.g. "America," "US" and "USA" for the United States).

False positives are counted as the time to analyze the context of each and every search match would be too great or analyzing it only for smaller search results would create a bias.

Queries were submitted on 3 September 2012.

• Second release: September 2010 (I). Field date: 16-18 September 2010. Changed "is a" to "is|being a;" changed "first and "third" to "first|1st" and "third|3rd," respectively.
• Third release: September 2010 (II). Field date: 26 September 2010. Merged and modified queries.
• Fourth release: February 2011. Field date: 28 February 2011.
• Fifth release: March 2011. Field date: 28 February and 3 March 2011. Added a new query: "X is|being a very|highly developed country|nation|state|economy|market"|"X has been a developed country|nation|state|economy". Removed "% Developing" column from table.
• Sixth release: June 2011. Field date: 6 June 2011.
• Seventh release: September 2011. Field date: 1 September 2011.
• Eighth release: December 2011. Field date: 30 November 2011.
• Ninth release: March 2012. Field date: 3 March 2012.
• Tenth release: June 2012. Field date: 31 May 2012.
