User:Qcne/AfC template rewrites

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rationale

The Problem: why change the current templates

AfC is often the first interaction with the Wikipedia community a new editor has. When their first experience is receiving a dense wall of jargon, it can be hostile rather than helpful. It discourage them from fixing that specific draft and pretty often drives them away from editing entirely.

The current AfC templates have accumulated over years of policy changes. Though correct they suffer from significant UX issues that hinder the review process and are unfriendly for new editors:

  • Walls of text: present new editors with dense paragraphs of bolded text, triggering banner blindness
  • Jargon: lots of Wiki-specific terms that are clear to experienced editors but opaque to new editors.
  • Inconsistency: different decline comment templates use different phrasing for the exact same notability requirements.
  • Resubmit loop: current templates often rely on generic advice, new users frequently fall into a cycle of making minor, trivial edits and immediately resubmitting. Wastes both author and reviewer time.

Because new users don't understand the feedback, they resubmit without making changes, or flood the AFCHD/Teahouse with questions when the comment template theoretically already told them.

The Rationale: Goals of this rewrite

The primary goal is to shift the voice of the templates from "gatekeeper" to "coach".

  • Scannability: break dense prose into bulleted checklists. This allows users to quickly scan what is missing from their draft with clear headings of what to do next.
  • Decode the jargon: translate wikispeak into plain English.
  • Standardise: align all comment templates around the same three core pillars of GNG.
  • Checklist in bullets: a clear "checklist" for new editors that hopefully prevents resubmit loops.
  • Action oriented: wrap-around templates should end with a clear Next Step instructions and where to get Help, so the user knows exactly what to do next.

Do the rewrites meet the rationale?

Mostly. This proposed suite of templates achieves:

  • Cognitive reduction: the rewrites reduce word count and visual clutter while increasing the instructional value.
  • Consistency: all templates are visually, grammatically, and structurally consistent.
  • Policy: the rewrites link to the same policies (GNG, BLP, COI) but frame them as criteria to be met rather than rules that have been broken.
  • Efficiency: these templates should hopefully reduce the number of low-quality resubmissions, questions at AFCHD/Teahouse, and confused new editors.

Where the rewrites have limitations

  • By moving to plain English we inevitably lose a degree of technical precision.
  • Some of the rewrites are still pretty policy/guideline link-heavy.
  • The few subject-specific notability comment templates with OR statements might be confusing (i.e. prof or music).
  • The word count is often lower but the use of bullet points and separated sections and headers increases the vertical height of the templates, taking up more screen space. Is this mobile friendly?
  • Larger suite of standardised templates is easier for users, but harder to maintain for Template editors.

Notability

neo

Neologisms are not considered suitable for Wikipedia unless they receive substantial use and press coverage; this requires strong evidence in independent, reliable, published sources. Links to sites specifically intended to promote the neologism itself do not establish its notability. This draft's references do not show that the neologism meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion. The draft requires multiple published secondary sources that:
  • provide significant coverage: discuss the term in detail, not just brief mentions or routine use;
  • are reliable: from reputable outlets with editorial oversight;
  • are independent: not connected to the subject, such as promoted or sponsored content.

Please add references that meet all three of these criteria. If none exist, the subject is not yet suitable for Wikipedia.

Wikipedia is not a dictionary and we do not accept articles that are simply definitions of neologisms.

list

No existing decline template, this is a new suggestion. This draft's references do not show the list meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion for stand-alone lists. The draft requires evidence of:
  • group notability: sources must discuss the items in the list as a whole, rather than just verifying that the individual items exist;
  • encyclopedic purpose: avoid cross-categorisations, such as "List of X of Y", unless sources explicitly discuss this intersection as a distinct subject;

This submission appears to be a news report of a single event and may not be notable enough for an article in Wikipedia. Please see Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#NEWS and Wikipedia:Notability (people)#People notable for only one event for more information. This draft appears to be a news report or about a single event. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not an indiscriminate collection of information or a news service. We generally do not accept articles about:

Please add references published after the initial breaking news has passed that demonstrate the event's lasting significance. If none exist, the subject is not yet suitable for Wikipedia.

dict

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not a dictionary. We cannot accept articles that are little more than definitions of words or abbreviations as entries. A good article should begin with a good definition, but expand on the subject. You might try creating a definition for this instead at Wiktionary, which is a dictionary. Please only do so if it meets that sister project's criteria for inclusion. These require among others, attestation for the word or phrase, as verified through clear widespread use, or its use in permanently recorded media, conveying meaning, in at least three independent instances spanning at least a year. This draft appears to be a dictionary definition. Wikipedia is not a dictionary and we do not accept articles that are simply definitions of words, acronyms, or slang.
  • To improve the draft it must expand on the subject, such as discussing its history, cultural significance, or impact rather than just defining the word;
  • To create a dictionary entry you can contribute to our sister project Wiktionary. Please ensure the subject meets Wiktionary's inclusion criteria.

plot

The proposed article is not suitable for Wikipedia. Because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, articles on fictional subjects should cover their real-world context and contain sourced analysis, offering detail on a work's development, impact or historical significance—not just a summary of the plot. You may wish to add this content to an existing article. As anyone can edit Wikipedia, you are free to do so yourself. This draft appears to be a plot summary. Wikipedia does not host articles consisting of only plot summaries. Articles about fictional subjects must cover their real-world context supported by multiple published secondary sources that:
  • provide significant coverage: discuss the work in detail, not just brief mentions or routine announcements;
  • are reliable: from reputable outlets with editorial oversight;
  • are independent: not connected to the subject, such as press releases, the subject's own website, or sponsored content.

Please add references that meet all three of these criteria. If none exist, the subject is not yet suitable for Wikipedia.

joke

It appears that your submission is either an attempt to be humorous rather than factual, or is an obvious hoax. As Wikipedia strives to contain only factual entries, we can not accept your submission at this time. This draft appears to be a joke or a hoax. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. We do not accept:
  • hoaxes: made-up stories presented as fact;
  • humor: content intended to be funny rather than informative.

Please use the sandbox to practice editing. Do not submit this draft for review until you have written an article intended for the encyclopedia.

Users who continue to create inappropriate pages may be blocked from editing Wikipedia.

llm

Your draft shows signs of having been generated by a large language model, such as ChatGPT. Wikipedia guidelines prohibit the use of LLMs to write articles from scratch. In addition, LLM-generated articles usually have multiple quality issues, to include:

Please address these issues. The best way is usually to read reliable sources and summarize them, instead of using a large language model. See our help page on large language models.

This draft appears to be generated by a large language model (such as ChatGPT). You should not use LLMs to write articles from scratch.

LLM-generated pages with the below issues may be deleted without notice.

These tools are prone to specific issues that violate our policies:

  • hallucinations: they often invent false information and cite non-existent references.
  • unencyclopedic tone: they tend to be vague, promotional, or essay-like, rather than neutral and factual.
  • copyright issues: they may closely paraphrase existing text, leading to copyright violations.

Instead, only summarize in your own words a range of independent, reliable, published sources that discuss the subject.

See the advice page on large language models for more information.

resume

This submission appears to read more like a resume than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, that provide secondary analysis of the subject's life in context. In contrast, résumés will tend to list individual accomplishments and rely on self-published sources, which might unduly focus on positive events and fail to properly balance their weight. Please rewrite your submission to comply with these policies by using independent, reliable sources. This draft reads like a resume or curriculum vitae. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a professional networking website or a place to promote yourself or your services. We also strongly discourage writing about yourself.

Articles about people must meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion for people. The draft requires multiple published secondary sources that:

  • provide significant coverage: discuss the person in detail, not just brief mentions or routine announcements;
  • are reliable: from reputable outlets with editorial oversight;
  • are independent: not connected to the person, such as interviews, press releases, the subject's own website, or sponsored content.

Please add references that meet all three of these criteria. If none exist, the subject is not yet suitable for Wikipedia.

ecr

No existing decline template, this is a new suggestion. This draft covers a contentious topic with an editing restriction. To prevent disruption, Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee only permits editors with Extended confirmed accounts to write about this topic.
  • You are not Extended confirmed. Your account must be at least 30 days old and have at least 500 edits.
  • You must wait until your account becomes Extended confirmed before making further edits or resubmitting this draft.

For a list of contentious topics and their restrictions see Contentious topics.

nosource

No existing decline template, this is a new suggestion. This draft does not include any sources or inline citations. Wikipedia's verifiability policy requires that all content be supported by reliable sources. You should also use inline citations (footnotes) to show which source supports which specific statement.

The draft requires multiple published secondary sources that:

  • provide significant coverage: discuss the subject in detail, not just brief mentions or routine announcements;
  • are reliable: from reputable outlets with editorial oversight;
  • are independent: not connected to the subject, such as press releases, the subject's own website, or sponsored content.

Please add references that meet all three of these criteria. If none exist, the subject is not yet suitable for Wikipedia.

You must place an inline citation directly after:

  • quotations;
  • any material whose verifiability is likely to be challenged or is contentious;
  • any material about living people.

essay

This submission reads more like an essay than an encyclopedia article. Submissions should summarize information in secondary, reliable sources and not contain opinions or original research. Please write about the topic from a neutral point of view in an encyclopedic manner. This draft reads like an essay or opinion piece. Wikipedia is not a place for original research or personal opinions. The draft should:

Instead, only summarize in your own words a range of independent, reliable, published sources that discuss the subject.

npov

This submission does not appear to be written in the formal tone expected of an encyclopedia article. Entries should be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources. Please rewrite your submission in a more encyclopedic format. Please make sure to avoid peacock terms that promote the subject. This draft is not written from a neutral point of view. Wikipedia articles must be written neutrally in a formal, impersonal, and dispassionate way. They should not read like a blog post, advertisement, or fan page. Rewrite the draft to remove:

Instead, only summarize in your own words a range of independent, reliable, published sources that discuss the subject.

adv

This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This is important so that the article can meet Wikipedia's verifiability policy and the notability of the subject can be established. If you still feel that this subject is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, please rewrite your submission to comply with these policies. This draft reads like an advertisement. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a platform for promotion or marketing. Drafts that are exclusively promotional may be deleted without notice.

  • I think this a very good attempt at breaking up the 'wall of words' into something that is better understood, and that will direct the new user in the right direction.
Here are a few tweaks that might make it even clearer.

This is going to require some tinkering, as the Next steps section is slightly different between the different templates:

Should we re-write "Helptools" so that it can be appropriately transcluded to all three of the above? Or do we do have no transclusions, and manually include the section in each template? nil nz 02:58, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
