Bhanudas

pp.213-4

Bhanudasa was born in 1448 in Paithan. He was a Deshashtha Brahmin. At the age of ten, Bhanudasa was accosted by his father. He went to an abandoned temple outside Paithan and worshipped the sun-god Surya; thus he became known as Bhanudasa (lit. "the servant of Surya").

The Vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya is said to have moved the central icon of the god Vithoba from the Pandharpur temple to the Vijayavitthala temple in his kingdom. The icon may have been moved to protect it from iconoclastic Muslim invaders. Bhanudasa is credited to have returned the icon to its original location in Pandharpur. The king may have handed over the icon after the danger recedes.

Few abhangas of Bhanudasa survive.

Bhanudasa took samadhi in 1513.

Bhanudasa had a son named Chakrapani. The Varkari saint Ekanath was the son of Chakrapani's son Suryanarayana.

As per Ekanathi Bhagavata, Bhanudasa died aroun the birth of Suryanarayana.
