I am a PhD student in Computer Science at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington in Pōneke, Aotearoa New Zealand. My primary focus is understanding ecology and bird populations using computational modeling. My research interests beyond that involve open science, open source, community science platforms, and taxonomy.
As well, I am the organizer for SustainOSS, and have recorded hundreds of podcasts on open source sustainability there. I am also one of the two organizers of CURIOSS, the community for university and research institution open source program offices. I have been interested and involved in open source communities for decades. I was formerly the Interim Executive Director for the GNOME Foundation, a nonprofit building a diverse and sustainable free software personal computing ecosystem.
In my spare time, I am a professional conlanger, creating languages for TV studios and novelists, an avid reader and hiker, and interested in civic, local action towards a more sustainable future.

Creation of Wikipedia articles in my area of expertise
I’ve been briefed on the conflict of interest rules including those around being a subject-matter expert editing within my area of expertise. I understand that I’m expected to make sure that my external role as a PhD student and open source community organizer and my relationships in my field of expertise do not interfere with my primary role when editing Wikipedia i.e. to further the interests of the encyclopaedia.
Because of the topic of my expertise and specialisation I will be citing peer reviewed journal papers that I have authored or co-authored. I will also be writing Wikipedia articles on species where I was a key researcher in the involved in the taxonomic nomenclature for that species. I am aware of the possibility of a conflict of interest issue with citing my own published work. Papers I have authored or co-authored will only be cited if that paper is relevant to the topic and conforms to the content policies of Wikipedia. Any citation will not be excessive nor will it place undue emphasis on my work. I will be citing the most recent quality research available whether it is by me or someone else.
