- Carroll v. United States (1925) - The Carroll doctrine and Motor vehicle exception
- California v. Acevedo (1970) - with probable cause, can search car after towing it
- Pennsylvania v. Mimms (1977) - for officer safety, can order driver and passenger out of car and pat-down
- United States v. Johns (1985) - three day delay OK after police take possession
- Colorado v. Bertine (1987) - can use evidence found during inventory search (only if dept has standardized policy)
- Maryland v Wilson (1997)
- Atwater v. City of Lago Vista (2001)
- Thornton v. United States (2004) - if arrest passenger, can search compartments and containers on passenger side of car
