Testing list-defined notes and regular refs. Fake situation.

Problems
- Why is there a huge blank area below the notes? The more notes there are, the bigger it gets.
- Why are the last three only listed as if the refs are only used once, even though they are all used two times each?
- Is there a better code to use for list-defined notes?

It's not really blank, it's full of hidden error messages. To make these visible, see H:SHOWCITEERROR. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 07:44, 1 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks. I have installed that and now see the errors. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 14:19, 1 September 2025 (UTC)
- Redrose64, it appears that all the references are made in the same way and used the same number of times, so I don't see why they don't render in the same way.
- Also, is there a better code to use for making list-defined notes (not references)? -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 19:52, 1 September 2025 (UTC)
- Please see Help:Cite errors/Cite error empty references define#Issues and resolution, which says
Footnotes are nested inside list-defined references. This is a known bug, for now just do not use list-defined references.
--Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 07:08, 2 September 2025 (UTC)- Thanks. Can you recommend someone else who understands this stuff whom I can talk to? There has got to be a solution. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 20:21, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
- Personally, I would avoid LDR altogether. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:31, 3 September 2025 (UTC)
- I generally do, although I have written more than one article that uses only LDR, but that's a long time ago. The reason I'm doing it now is for some very large notes that make editing the body difficult. In such cases, I like to make them LDR. For grouping multiple sources, I just make them a note, not LDR. A list of pure refs is easier to edit around than a combination of prose and refs.
- In the absence of fixing this bug, what do you think of my workaround solution below? You'll have to look at the page to see how it works. Strictly speaking, that is not LDR, just removing them from the body and grouping them at the bottom in the Notes section. Feel free to experiment with it. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 21:49, 3 September 2025 (UTC)

Now I've tried another solution by hatting the notes group. That got rid of all the error messages and looks clean. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 23:01, 2 September 2025 (UTC)
