Vasko Shutarov

Dr. Vasko Šutarov (born June 9, 1964, in Kavadarci) is a Macedonian political scientist, diplomat, and former Member of Parliament from Gevgelija. He graduated from the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade in 1989, specializing in diplomacy. Šutarov obtained a Master’s degree in Legal Studies and Applied Diplomacy from the Goce Delčev University in Štip, where he later earned his PhD in Political Science.

Career

Šutarov’s academic interests include political science, with a particular focus on international political relations, international cultural relations, as well as public, cultural, and digital diplomacy. In his professional career, he served as a councillor in the Municipal Council of Gevgelija from 2000 to 2006. He was a Member of Parliament in the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia from 2006 to 2011[1]. During his parliamentary tenure, he served as Chair of the Committee on Culture (2009–2011) and Chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy (2009-2011).

From 2011 to 2017, Šutarov served as Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of the Republic of Macedonia in Sofia, Republic of Bulgaria, and concurrently as Director of the Macedonian Cultural and Information Centre[2] in Sofia.

Since 2025, Šutarov has been Director[3] of the Macedonian[4] Cultural and Information[5] Centre in Belgrade[6].[7]

He is the author of numerous academic works, as well as the following books: Public and Cultural Diplomacy [8](Panili, Skopje, 2014); Public and Cultural Diplomacy (Isida, Sofia, 2016); The Cultural Diplomacy of the SFRY[9] and the Cultural Diplomacies of the Successor States (Printing House “Sofia”, Bogdanci, 2019)[10]; With a Grain of Salt and a Piece of Lokum[11]: Quarantine Columns and Essays (Makevej[12], Skopje, 2021); When the Homeland Becomes a Child, and the Truth – a Struggle [13](Columns and Essays) (Makevej, 2022); and Memory, Forgetting and Other Important Things[14]: (Columns August 2022 – August 2024) (Makevej, 2024)[15].

He regularly published columns for the “Republika”[16] portal[17] from 2019 to 2021.
