Career

Uunona began his political career as an anti-apartheid activist in south-west Africa (now namibia)[4] and as a member of SWAPO. He was also a member of the militant organization People's Liberation Army. At the time, South Africa had a segregation system which separated black and white people known as apartheid.[5]

He has been elected as a councillor several times since 2004 at the Ompundja Constituency in the Oshana regional council elections. In November 2020, he won a local election in northern Namibia with 1,196 votes, which was 85% of the vote. Uunona's name was printed as "Adolf H" on the ballot paper. His full name was revealed after the full results were released.[6][7] The other person in the election, Mumbala Abner of the IPC party got only 213 votes. Uunona continued to be the councillor of the Ompundja Constituency of Namibia.[8]

Name

German names like "Adolf" are common in Namibia, in part because Namibia was a German colony called German South West Africa between 1884 and 1915 under the German Empire, and later a mandate of the Union of South Africa.[8]

Adolf Hitler Uunona made world news for having the the same name as Adolf Hitler, the tyrant of Nazi Germany in World War II after his election is December 3, 2020.[9][7] However, he claimed he was never aware of the negative implications of his name until his teenage years.[10] Uunona publicly distanced himself from his namesake, attributing this to his parents' ignorance at the time.[11]

In an interview with the German newspaper Bild: "It was a completely normal name for me as a child. It wasn't until I grew up that I realized: This man wanted to subjugate the whole world. I have nothing to do with any of these things [...] My father named me after this man. He probably didn't understand what Adolf Hitler stood for." he also jokingly added: "I'm not trying to take over the world."[12][13] Uunona usually goes by the first name "Adolf" alone or "Adolf Uunona" while in public. He says he has no plans to change his name, since it is already on so many government documents.[14] Uunona is known to take his name light-heartedly, saying that he has no goals of "world domination."[15]

Following the interview, Uunona has refused to speak further on the subject, claiming it is a distraction from his work.[16] However, he soon expressed his annoyance at being called "the Adolf Hitler of Africa" by saying, "There's really no reason for us to be sitting here discussing my name. How will it contribute to the development of Namibia?"[17]
