Charles Dickens
Thank you for inviting me to comment, but I fear I am not well up in Dickens, and I cannot helpfully comment on the question of his anti-semitism. Casual, mild anti-semitism was pretty rife in England until after the Second World War: things Noel Coward, T. S. Eliot and others wrote look very unacceptable now, but were fairly unremarkable in their day. Whether Dickens was another such or was actively anti-semitic I really do not know. It may be a question of checking the sources to see what his many biographers and analysts say on the matter. Tim riley (talk) 19:59, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll take a look this weekend. Although I have read half of Dickens work, I have only a limited knowledge of his personal bio, but I have easy access to a fair amount of works about him. This is just an acknowledgment I have received your message. More anon--WickerGuy (talk) 21:05, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Hello - I remember reading the page a couple of years ago and thinking - part of this article is making out Dickens was a racist - and he wasn't' kind of thing - when I argued a little I was referred to his portrayal of Fagin, and his reaction to the Mutiny in India , and a massacre (Siege of Cawnpore), there of British people, - I remember a letter where he wrote something outrageous about he hoped the Indian race would be wiped out in revenge - it seemed to me , unhinged - 'I should do my utmost to exterminate the race' - , an emotional retort, not his literal wish , - but I realised there was a lot of Dickens I didn't know really - I'd always accepted the portrayal of him as a radical, a writer concerned for the poor and oppressed, etc - perhaps this was not the whole story - I didn't know enough to argue much more - I've just bought Miriam Margolyes dvd Dickens in America funnily enough, and she knows him back to front , and worships him, and shes left-wing and Jewish. And Orwell admired him. the article I want to contribute to at the moment is American Notes, now I've got the dvd. Sorry if thats not much help- I do think the 'racist' portrayal is overplayed in short, but don't have the comprehensive knowledge of his work I'd need to make my opinion really valuable Sayerslle (talk) 01:50, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I saw your post on Ceoil's page . I've done a couple of lit. biographies - brought them through FAC - and have had the page watch listed for a long time. I've noticed the issues there - I'd be willing to help but am only editing sporadically these days. Certainly I can chime in on the talk page. First though I need to grab a Dickens biography from the library (I'm fairly familiar but need a refreshment). Also I have access to scholarly material if we need it. Hope you don't mind that I'm butting in. Truthkeeper (talk) 14:37, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
