Fishpond and Mighty Ape

I noticed that you prodded Fishpond.co.nz and Mighty Ape. I have removed the prod from the former only because another editor removed the prod from Mighty Ape. These two companies are direct competitors and are probably of approximately equal notability. The two articles should be treated equally on Wikipedia, unless of course someone can find significant sources for one of them but not the other. I have no connection with either other than having placed occasional orders with both. Feel free to take them to AfD.-gadfium 20:50, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

While the Syrian Civil War crept its slow way into the minds of the public, with a new fourth related entry in the top 25, the top 10 remained dominated by celebrity, mainly sports and music. Two megabucks transfers stimulated public interest in football/soccer ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, while Lil Wayne's public apology ahead of his latest album release sent him to the top.

Your involvement with DRN

Hi there, I noticed that you haven't been as active at DRN as you was before. DRN has been a bit backlogged lately and we could use some extra hands. We have updated our volunteer list to a new format, Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Volunteers (your name is still there under the old format if you haven't updated it) and are looking into ways to make DRN more effective and more rewarding for volunteers (your input is appreciated!). If you don't have much time to volunteer at the moment, that's fine too, just move your name to the inactive list (you're free to add yourself back to active at any time). Sacred Band

"Primary topic" is not a matter of which article you think is more important. It means that when you type a term into the search box, you go to the primary topic article. If you type in Sacred Band, you go to a disambiguation page. Sacred Band of Thebes is therefore not primary topic and should not have a hatnote. The guideline uses the examples defamation and Defamation (film). The "Defamation (film)" article is not primary and therefore does not have a hatnote. Epaminondas of Thebes (talk) 04:26, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Well, I noticed that when I start typing "sacred band" into the search bar, by the time I get to "sacred ba", the first option in the drop-down list is Sacred Band of Thebes, which I think many users may click on. So it's not which one I think is most important, but which article(s) people may end up at. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 04:33, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
Oh, and a Google search for "sacred band" put Sacred Band of Thebes as result #1. All in all, I think many readers will end up on the Sacred Band of Thebes page, so that page should have a link to the disambiguation if that's not the Sacred Band they were looking for. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 04:33, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
To get to the article, either through the search box or Google, the reader currently has to click on "Sacred Band of Thebes", so I don't see how removing hatnote creates any ambiguity. Anyway, we can get around this problem by moving Sacred Band to Sacred Band (disambiguation), and then setting the redirect to Sacred Band of Thebes. Epaminondas of Thebes (talk) 04:54, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
It is waaaay too late for me to think clearly about this...I don't know, do what you feel makes the articles easiest to navigate. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 04:56, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Op-ed: Commons medical diagnostic images under threat from unresolved ownership
Medical images have transformed many aspects of modern medicine. Over the past two decades the increasing sophistication of MRI, CT-scanning, and X-ray techniques has made these technologies the cornerstone of diagnosing a range of conditions, replacing what used to be largely guesswork by doctors. They can be the difference between life and death for a patient, and their importance is underlined by the tens of billions of dollars spent on them annually just in North America. For Wikimedia Foundation projects, advanced images are now a powerful tool for describing and explaining, and educating our worldwide readership of medical articles.

Hello

Hi, I'm one of the users on whose page you left a cookie! Thanks for the cookie! I have a couple of questions and i would be grateful if you can help me out. I have run into some trouble with the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swami_Nithyananda.. One of the users who is editing there is a PR person of "nithyananda" himself. I'm betting for this user to come back and revert my edits because this particular user has been in many edit wars on the same article before. I would be really grateful if you can give me a link to the detailed rules regarding these following topics:

Wikipedia's rules regarding self-publishing and Biographies. Wikipedia's rules regarding references (And what qualifies as a reference). Wikipedia's rules on edit/revert wars.

Thank you!  Preceding unsigned comment added by Lookinhotbra (talkcontribs) 18:28, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Sure, the relevant policies here are Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, Wikipedia:Edit warring, Wikipedia:Conflict of interest (if you think that one editor is closely connected to the subject), and WP:Identifying reliable sources. Those should cover it, I think.
Two things though...first, if someone reverts the edits you made to the Swami's page, do not revert back, as that's how edit wars start. Instead, discuss the edits on the talk page. Second, which account do you think is the PR person? Howicus (Did I mess up?) 18:44, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the useful links!

I have also left a message on the talk page. The possible PR person is the user named Acnaren , He has been a wikipedia member since 2009 and only does edits on the swami's page. He had also previously removed any statements in the article regarding the crimes committed by the swami even though they were referenced using leading indian daily newspapers. Thanks!

Please advise on how to deal with vandalism and edit warring

Hi, Acnaren came back and reverted all my edits on Swami Nithyananda.I had deleted some articles on that page because they violate wikipedia's policies of WP:NOR and WP:SPS, Acnaren started edit warring without even discussing on talk page. Acnaren has also been deleting pretty much every article with valid references from national newspapers. Please advise on how to deal with this type of vandalism and revert wars...A couple of other users had also raised these rule violations on the talk page, But these notifications of wikipedia's rules were ignored, and they seem to kinda have a monopoly over the page bulldozing any other user even if we stick to the rules..Can i report these users to someone??? Eurofighter DRN

Can this be removed from archive because it isn't resolved?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_noticeboard/Archive_78

The story so far is that we have an airforce user providing a speed at a specific altitude and the company who produce the aircraft verifying it as possible. I can't understand why substantiated new information like this isn't sufficient for an article update.

The other side is relying on a magazine reprint of legacy press release figures and calling it a secondary source. As regards this let me draw your attention to the following:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:USEPRIMARY#.22Secondary.22_is_not_another_way_to_spell_.22good.22 From from the above: "Characteristics of a secondary source: "A secondary source usually provides analysis, commentary, evaluation, context, and interpretation. It is this act of going beyond simple description, and telling us the meaning behind the simple facts, that makes them valuable to Wikipedia." Jane's fulfills none of the criteria mentioned in the sentence above wrt the Typhoon Mach figure and has remained stagnant (not updated) since 2003. There is no discussion of the initial press released speed figure nor analysis of it. Z07x10 (talk) 22:29, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Furthermore https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:USEPRIMARY#Not_a_matter_of_counting_the_number_of_links_in_the_chain: "Consider the simple example above: the original proclamation is a primary source. Is the book necessarily a secondary source? The answer is: not always. If the book merely quotes the proclamation (such as re-printing a section in a sidebar or the full text in an appendix, or showing an image of the signature or the official seal on the proclamation) with no analysis or commentary, then the book is just a newly printed copy of the primary source, rather than being a secondary source. The text and images of the proclamation always remain primary sources."

In this instance Jane's is not a secondary source.Z07x10 (talk) 16:15, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

I'm gonna be honest with you, and say that I have no idea what to think about the dispute. Re-list it on DRN if you want, but I don't think I'll be able to provide much more help here...my apologies. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 17:12, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

Hoping for help regarding list policy

In this edit you mentioned that lists do not need as many citations. I am kind of confused about the policy because I am just listing people for whom we already have articles, and their date of birth and date of marriage are both listed on those articles. Someone is removing both my reference notations (which list that data) and entire entries, but I am confused about why. If they are taking issue with this information, shouldn't we be addressing that on the specific people's pages rather than on a list overview? Ranze (talk) 15:37, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Well, I'm not entirely sure why they're removing names myself...you'd probably be better off asking TheRedPenOfDoom directly, either on Talk:List of child brides or TheRedPenOfDoom's talk page. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 15:40, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

In January we raised several potentially troublesome issues for the Wikimedia movement in taking on Wikivoyage, including the apparent inadequacy of the English Wikivoyage sex-tourism policy, hurriedly strengthened against mention of child sex after our inquiries. However, both sex-tourism and illegal-activities policies remain equivocal about how the site should treat entries about sex tourism more generally, and drugs that are classed as illicit in almost every country. Yet the Signpost has found it remarkably easy to locate material in Wikivoyage that violates both the spirit and the letter of the policies.

Here are some projects that never got off the ground and the lessons that can be gleaned from their follies

  • News and notes: Alleged "outing" of editor's personal information leads to Wikipedia ban
As part of the second major "outing" controversy to hit the English Wikipedia in less than a year, the Chelsea/Bradley Manning naming dispute was dragged into the spotlight yet again when the English Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee ruled by motion to remove the administrator tools from and ban long-time Wikipedia contributor Phil Sandifer.
  • Traffic report: Danse Macabre
It's fair to say that commemorating death was a strong theme this week, with Lou Reed's passing generating interest, as well as a Google Doodle celebrating the costume designer Edith Head. And of course, the world's greatest celebrations of the dead, Halloween and the Day of the Dead, were also popular this week.
  • Featured content: Five years of work leads to 63-article featured topic
HMS Hood, one of the most famous warships of the Second World War, was a battlecruiser and therefore part of what is now the largest featured topic on Wikipedia: "Battlecruisers of the world". The topic was promoted to "featured" status on the English Wikipedia last week alongside eleven articles, three lists, four pictures, and two other topics.
  • WikiProject report: WikiProject Accessibility
This week, we spent some time with WikiProject Accessibility, a project that strives to make Wikipedia accessible for users with disabilities. The project improves Wikipedia's guidelines and Manual of Style, collects useful templates and scripts, and provides support to impaired Wikipedians.
  • Arbitration report: Ebionites 3 case closed
The Ebionites 3 case has closed with an interaction ban for the two editors involved in the dispute.

Steelbro

Hi I've tried to start the Steelbro page but it seems a bit too hard having done the work two months ago. As there are multiple references within Wikipedia to this company I don't understand the problem here. I will leave this to someone with more motivation to share this history, as I won't resubmit. Pity. I guess you're trying to be helpful, but it's not been very successful. Regards greg  Preceding unsigned comment added by Greg.muirsmeath (talkcontribs) 11:13, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Just deleted a template from AfC that appeared on your page

Not sure how that happened - your only connection to the article was that you commented on it. Cheers! Julie JSFarman (talk) 15:19, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

  • Traffic report: Google Doodlebugs bust the block
The numbers this week are beyond anything that has been seen since this report began. The top view count beats the average by an order of magnitude. Usually the appearance of numbers this big on the list is due to spamming, but in this case it seems they are due to honest interest; more specifically, Google Doodles, which for the first time claimed all five top slots. This column has raised numerous times the power of a Google Doodle to shine light on Wikipedia, but the wattage has never been as high as this.
  • Special report: FDC staff raise the benchmarks for activities, impact, planning, and governance
The supporting staff of the Wikimedia Foundation’s powerful volunteer Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) have released their assessments for the third half-yearly round of funding applications. The applications for the newly named annual plan grants were submitted by affiliated entities on 1 October, and comprise a total of more than US$5M in bids.

  • From the editor: The Signpost needs your help
As I said in August, contributing to the Signpost can be one of the most rewarding things an editor can do. The genre is refreshingly different from that of Wikipedia articles, and can allow writers to use a different range of skills. The need for an independent, volunteer-run Signpost continues to grow, given the increasing complexity and financial expenditures of the global Wikimedia movement, not to mention the English Wikipedia.
  • Book review: Peter Burke's Social History of Knowledge—ambitious, fascinating, and exhaustive
Peter Burke's A Social History of Knowledge: Volume II: From the Encyclopédie to Wikipedia is a broad and wide-ranging look at how knowledge has been created, acquired, organized, disseminated, and sometimes lost in the Western world over the last two and a half centuries, a sequel to his 2000 book covering the prior three centuries, A Social History of Knowledge: From Gutenberg to Diderot.
  • Featured content: Rockin' the featured pictures
Four articles, five lists, and thirty-four pictures were promoted to 'featured status' this week, including an image of a small fraction of the 18,000 taxis that serve Hong Kong.
  • WikiProject report: Score! American football on Wikipedia
This week, we headed over to WikiProject National Football League. With 10 Featured Articles, 61 Featured Lists, and 142 Good Articles (as of publication), this WikiProject has done a lot of work improving American football articles.
  • News and notes: Foundation to Wiki-PR: cease and desist; Arbitration Committee elections starting
The Wikimedia Foundation has sent a formal cease and desist letter to Wiki-PR—the public relations agency accused of breaking Wikipedia policies and guidelines by creating, editing, and maintaining several thousand articles for paying clients through a sophisticated array of accounts. The Foundation's attorneys, Cooley LLP, have demanded that Wiki-PR's employees abide by the site's Terms of Use and the language of a community ban from the English Wikipedia.
  • Traffic report: Ill Winds
It's not hard to guess which event is leading interest in the top 25 this week. The sheer scale of Typhoon Haiyan is staggering; estimates place its maximum windspeed upon first landfall in the Philippines on November 6 at 315 km/h, which would make it the most powerful tropical cyclone ever to reach land. To date, the storm has killed nearly 4000 people and damaged or destroyed nearly 4 million homes.
  • Arbitration report: WMF opens the door for non-admin arbitrators
Back in March, when the March 25 Arbitration Report covered the Audit Subcommittee appointment discussion, a statement from the WMF legal division clarified its position that access to deleted revisions required an RFA or RFA-identical process; therefore AUSC committee appointments were not open to non-admins. The WMF legal team has now further clarified its position, saying that running for and winning an election for arbitrator would qualify as the type of rigorous community selection process required for the checkuser and oversight rights held by arbitrators.

What are you doing?

Of course it doesn't have so much information yet. The article was just started. The subject as such is of course vital and relevant. Do remove your deletion request. Arms Jones (talk) 23:20, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Since the article is so short, I'd recommend expanding London Borough of Barking and Dagenham#Coat of arms first, and then splitting off the section if the Coat of Arms section becomes too big. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 23:23, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

  • News and notes: One decade of Wikisource; FDC recommendations raise serious questions
The sister project Wikisource, the digital library that hosts free-content primary sources, is now a decade old. Wikisource, which now has versions in 63 languages, is the sixth type of project to reach ten-year milestone and will be the last until 2016. The Wikimedia Foundation's volunteer Funds Dissemination Committee has published its recommendations to the Board of Trustees on 11 new applications for annual grants by 11 WMF-affiliated organisations. The maximum total budget for the current and upcoming March rounds is US$6M.
  • WikiProject report: Electronic Apple Pie
This week, we returned to WikiProject Apple Inc. for a peek at their newest articles about the latest in gadgets and software. The last time we took a bite out of WikiProject Apple, they had just finished merging WikiProject Macintosh and WikiProject iPhone OS. Today, the project is hard at work rewriting their primary article, improving the subject's outline, and adding to the project's list of 25 Good Articles and 6 Featured Articles.
  • Featured content: F*&!
Seventeen articles, four lists, and twenty-eight pictures were promoted to "featured" status in the last two weeks.

  • Traffic report: Deaths of Mandela, Walker top the list
When one edits this page for too long, one is tempted to appoint oneself as the psychoanalyst for the human race, or at least the English-speaking portion thereof. Since nearly everyone uses Wikipedia, the constant stream of TV updates, pointless celebrity scandals, and inquiries after who has died can seem like a dreary peek into humanity's surprisingly banal collective consciousness.

Hi, sorry it took me a bit to get back to you, I had to log off shortly after I tagged your page. The problem with that page is that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a social network. There was nothing on your page that was like an encyclopedia at all; it looked like you were trying to set up a "hangout" page, which is not what Wikipedia is for.
