A lengthy welcome
Welcome to Wikipedia. I've added a welcome message to the top of this page that gives a great deal of information about Wikipedia. I hope you find it useful.
Additionally, I hope you don't mind if I share some of my thoughts on starting out as a new editor on Wikipedia: If I could get editors in your situation to follow just one piece of advice, it would be this: Learn Wikipedia by working only on non-contentious topics until you have a feel for the normal editing process and the policies that usually come up when editing casually. You'll find editing to be fun, easy, and rewarding. The rare disputes are resolved quickly and easily in collaboration.
Working on biographical information about living persons is far more difficult. Wikipedia's Biographies of living persons policy requires strict adherence to multiple content policies, and applies to all information about living persons including talk pages.
If you have a relationship with the topics you want to edit, then you will need to review Wikipedia's Conflict of interest policy, which may require you to disclose your relationship and restrict your editing depending upon how you are affiliated with the subject matter. Regardless, editing in a manner that promotes an entity or viewpoint over others can appear to be detrimental to the purpose of Wikipedia and the neutrality required in articles.
Some topic areas within Wikipedia have special editing restrictions that apply to all editors. It's best to avoid these topics until you are extremely familiar with all relevant policies and guidelines.
If you work from reliable, independent sources, you shouldn't go far wrong. WP:RSP and WP:RSN are helpful in determining if a source is reliable.
If you find yourself in a disagreement with another editor, it's best to discuss the matter on the relevant talk page.
I hope you find some useful information in all this, and welcome again. --Hipal (talk) 23:11, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. Uncontroversial articles are a great place to start out for someone whose interest in Wikipedia comes from their desire to share their knowledge about an obscure subject, but my own interest has come mainly from the many recent news articles about how individuals such as Epstein and political groups have manipulated the site, and how their changes then are picked up by LLMs. Wikipedia tends to be very good about apolitical topics such as physics and astronomy, but politicized topics are the ones that everyone (even Jimbo Wales) thinks need lots of work. I believe you that apolitical topics are much easier to edit, but they also tend to have much less room for improvement, and cause much less harm when Wikipedia gets them wrong. If I become a regular here I'm confident I'll find a topic like that to edit eventually, though. -Itsnotgoodenough
A note about Jimbo
Jimmy Wales is effectively just another editor. While he's one with a fair bit of respect within this community, his past involvement in the project actually brings with it certain limitations on what he can and cannot do. If Wales weighs in on an argument it will likely not lead to a prompter resolution of that argument since, should the dispute go in his favour, it's likely people will complain either about WP:CANVAS if he was asked to participate or possibly about WP:SUPERVOTE if he does more than just leave an opinion. I notice you've made several statements in various contexts about contacting Jimmy. I'd suggest it's probably best to learn Wikipedia policy and how to edit on your own rather than proposing appeals to authority within a community that tends to be very negative toward appeals to authority. Please remember to assume good faith when dealing with other editors. Thank you. --Hipal (talk) 23:25, 26 February 2026 (UTC)
