Wikiproject Medicine May 2024 Newsletter

Issue 22—May 2024

WikiProject Medicine Newsletter

Hello all. Another irregular edition of the newsletter. I was inspired to collect this after seeing several medicine-interested editors nominate their first good article. Please review a GA nomination if you have time, and help support our colleagues' efforts:

Recognized content (since April 1)

National Public Health Laboratory (Sudan) nom. FuzzyMagma, reviewed by Snoteleks
Nighat Arif nom. Launchballer, reviewed by Chiswick Chap

Nominated for review

Hepatic hydrothorax nom. Aeschylus
Adrenal crisis nom. CursedWithTheAbilityToDoTheMath
Exhaustion disorder nom. Draken Bowser
Bite registration nom. Candle1, under review by Esculenta
Charles Wambebe nom. Vanderwaalforces
Polio Undergoing featured article review. You can contribute at the FAR page or the article talk page.

WP:MED News

  • Wikipedia:Good article reassessment is back in business, with a new process and new coordinators. If you see medicine-related GAs that may no longer meet the GA criteria, feel free to nominate them for attention/reassessment (please, not too many at once, lest we get overwhelmed). I'll incorporate them into the listings above.
  • Maintenance category of the month: Articles with topics of unclear notability (I've listed just the 36 that start with "A"; there are 398 total).
Note for the curious: 24,211 of the 57,554 articles (42%) tagged as part of WP:MED have some maintenance tag.

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Help with Delirium

Nice to meet you mate. I understand you're a Doctor which is amazing. Ive been working on improving Delirium article for a long time, but seems like not enough people care, or... maybe... want to help, with this disorder. The article has alot of information already but I improved it significantly by myself in the last month or so. Can you help, or if not, where in Wikipedia do I ask for others toh elp with specific article? If there's a place to ask,for assistance. Noam Atadgy (talk) 12:10, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

Help with moving an article

Hi Dr. Wolff: Admin help is needed in moving Jews in Madagascar to History of the Jews in Madagascar to matche all the other articles that are named "History of the Jews in ____", see Category:Jewish history by country#Pages in category "Jewish history by country". Thank you for your help and please let me know when you make the move so that I can fix the redirects affected by this. Sincerely, IZAK (talk) 22:32, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

@IZAK:  Done I hope I won't get in trouble fort this given the previous discussion. JFW | T@lk 09:40, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
Hi @IZAK, I've reverted that move because, per the discussion spurred by the previous undiscussed move to that title, "Jews in Madagascar" is more concise, doesn't imply Jews as a foreign ethnic group (since much of the article discusses indigenous converts to Judaism as well as para-Judaic mystics), and doesn't imply that the content is historical (since much of it is 2010-onwards). There were similar undiscussed moves and reverts at Jews in Taiwan and Jews in Hong Kong. ꧁Zanahary꧂ 16:22, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
@Zanahary: Thank you for your explanation that I totally oppose. These articles "History of the Jews in ____" have been around for over 20 years on WP without any problems until you arbitrarily decided to come along with the wrong reasons because these are not sociological articles or articles about a sect and they do not set the types of preconditions you are making up out of thin air, but rather they record the Jewish history of Jews, all kinds of Jews, in any country or region regardless of how long those Jews have existed or been recorded there or what types of Jews they are, whether "imported" or "home-grown" it makes no difference, they are part of the "History of the Jews in ____" . It could be ten years, or a hundred years or a thousand years, it's still their history. I intend to propose to change back the changes you have made and to retain the methodology that has existed on WP for well over two decades. IZAK (talk) 17:18, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Disputing Zanahary's move

Hi @Jfdwolff: I have started a discussion disputing your moves at History of the Jews in Madagascar, History of the Jews in Taiwan, History of the Jews in Hong Kong at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests#Contested technical requests. Thank you, IZAK (talk) 21:06, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of MAHA

Hello, Jfdwolff,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username Lukewarmbeer, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I have tagged MAHA for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. You may find our guide for writing quality articles to be extremely informative. Also, you may want to consider working on future articles in draft space first, where they cannot be deleted for lacking content.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top. If the page is already deleted by the time you come across this message and you wish to retrieve the deleted material, please contact the deleting administrator.

For any further query, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Lukewarmbeer}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

Lukewarmbeer (talk) 18:53, 3 February 2025 (UTC)

Hi @Lukewarmbeer:, it was a disambiguation page so others have already removed the speedy notice. I think it makes sense for it to be a disambiguation page, because MAHA clearly has enough different meanings for it not to only refer to the medical subject for which I originally created the redirect (microangiopathic hemolytic anemia). JFW | T@lk 19:34, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
Thanks. Yes have had some advice on this.
Would you agree with the below?....
@Lukewarmbeer: I suspect you may have meant to link MAHA based on the CSD tag of yours that I recently declined ({{speedy deletion-no content}} is not appropriate for dab pages). Disambiguation pages may disambiguate two entries, and that's perfectly fine. They're simply meant to be a sort of directory for possibly ambiguous terms. If I find a dab page that disambiguates only two or three entries, I typically mark is as reviewed, so long as the disambiguation makes sense. With that said, your link there (to Maha) actually shows that MAHA may be unnecessarily duplicating a portion of the information. I think you'd be fine to redirect the capitalized version, so long as you make sure to include Hockey Manitoba, which is missing, at the target dab page. Hey man im josh (talk) 19:14, 3 February 2025 (UTC) Lukewarmbeer (talk) 19:41, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
@Lukewarmbeer: Yup, sounds alright. JFW | T@lk 22:12, 3 February 2025 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Derekh Eretz (disambiguation)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Derekh Eretz (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is:

  • a disambiguation page with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" which lists only one extant Wikipedia page (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • a disambiguation page that lists zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • a redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" whose target is neither a disambiguation page nor page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 08:43, 24 May 2025 (UTC)

  • Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Proposed deletion of Subcutaneous

Notice

The article Subcutaneous has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Neither entry is known solely as "Subcutaneous", and this invalid disambiguation page obscures Search

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This is an automated notification. Please refer to the page's history for further information. DatBot (talk) 00:30, 29 October 2025 (UTC)

Guide to temporary accounts

Hello, Jfdwolff. This message is being sent to remind you of significant upcoming changes regarding logged-out editing.

Starting 4 November, logged-out editors will no longer have their IP address publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account (TA) associated with their edits. Users with some extended rights like administrators and CheckUsers, as well as users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will still be able to reveal temporary users' IP addresses and all contributions made by temporary accounts from a specific IP address or range.

How do temporary accounts work?

Editing from a temporary account
  • When a logged-out user completes an edit or a logged action for the first time, a cookie will be set in this user's browser and a temporary account tied with this cookie will be automatically created for them. This account's name will follow the pattern: ~2025-12345-67 (a tilde, year of creation, a number split into units of 5).
  • All subsequent actions by the temporary account user will be attributed to this username. The cookie will expire 90 days after its creation. As long as it exists, all edits made from this device will be attributed to this temporary account. It will be the same account even if the IP address changes, unless the user clears their cookies or uses a different device or web browser.
  • A record of the IP address used at the time of each edit will be stored for 90 days after the edit. Users with the temporary account IP viewer (TAIV) user right will be able to see the underlying IP addresses.
  • As a measure against vandalism, there are two limitations on the creation of temporary accounts:
    • There has to be a minimum of 10 minutes between subsequent temporary account creations from the same IP (or /64 range in case of IPv6).
    • There can be a maximum of 6 temporary accounts created from an IP (or /64 range) within a period of 24 hours.

How to enable IP Reveal

Impact for administrators

  • It will be possible to block many abusers by just blocking their temporary accounts. A blocked person won't be able to create new temporary accounts quickly if the admin selects the autoblock option.
  • It will still be possible to block an IP address or IP range.
  • Temporary accounts will not be retroactively applied to contributions made before the deployment. On Special:Contributions, you will be able to see existing IP user contributions, but not new contributions made by temporary accounts on that IP address. Instead, you should use Special:IPContributions for this (see a video about IPContributions in a gallery below).

Rules about IP information disclosure

  • Publicizing an IP address gained through TAIV access is generally not allowed (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 previously edited as 192.0.2.1 or ~2025-12345-67's IP address is 192.0.2.1).
  • Publicly linking a TA to another TA is allowed if "reasonably believed to be necessary". (e.g. ~2025-12345-67 and ~2025-12345-68 are likely the same person, so I am counting their reverts together toward 3RR, but not Hey ~2025-12345-68, you did some good editing as ~2025-12345-67)
  • See Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer § What can and can't be said for more detailed guidelines.

Useful tools for patrollers

  • It is possible to view if a user has opted-in to view temporary account IPs via the User Info card, available in Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → Tick Enable the user info card
    • This feature also makes it possible for anyone to see the approximate count of temporary accounts active on the same IP address range.
  • Special:IPContributions allows viewing all edits and temporary accounts connected to a specific IP address or IP range.
  • Similarly, Special:GlobalContributions supports global search for a given temporary account's activity.
  • The auto-reveal feature (see video below) allows users with the right permissions to automatically reveal all IP addresses for a limited time window.

ArbCom 2025 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2025 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 1 December 2025. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2025 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:18, 18 November 2025 (UTC)

A lot has happened in the WikiProject over the last 11 months. Next year promises to continue that trend with Vital Signs 2026, a campaign to achieve our goal of having all our top-importance articles at B-class or above.

WP:MED News

  • Asthma, HIV/AIDS and Meningitis are all in need of some tender love and care, with a median source date between 2008 and 2011. Many clinical guidelines note changes from earlier versions, so updating diagnosis and management sections may be doable even if you have less time on your hand.
  • Interested in which articles were most edited recently? That feature is back after a year hiatus. Recently, the Discussion overview stopped working. Can you help get it fixed or replace it?
  • Excited about the Vital Signs campaign? Sign up as an organiser or participant!

Technical news

  • Starting on November 4, the IP addresses of logged-out editors are no longer being publicly displayed. Instead, they will have a temporary account associated with their edits.
  • Administrators will now find that Special:MergeHistory is now significantly more flexible about what it can merge. It can now merge sections taken from the middle of the history of the source (rather than only the start) and insert revisions anywhere in the history of the destination page (rather than only the start). WikiProject Medicine Newsletter - January 2026

Issue 26—January 2026

WikiProject Medicine Newsletter

Happy New Year from WikiProject Medicine. Last year was tumultuous, with large language models competing for readers’ attention. These models often sound authoritative despite frequent hallucinations. They are however effective at writing in clear, accessible language, something research shows we often fail to achieve in medical articles. One of the goals of the Vital Signs 2026 campaign is to ensure that our top-importance articles are understandable, as this is one of the six B-class criteria they should meet.

WP:MED News

  • 2025 saw one Arbitration case related to WikiProject Medicine, related to conduct around transgender healthcare and people. The case saw a number of editors banned or topic-banned.
  • Thanks to Earwig, recent article talk discussions are updated again at WP:MED, so you never miss an interesting discussion. Our participant list is working too!
  • The Vital Signs campaign has kicked off. We've already removed misinformation from breast cancer, updated the management section of asthma, and assessed what needs to happen at autism. Can you help too?
    • Adopt an article, fix obvious mistakes, and assess if it now meets the B-class criteria in the progress table
    • Help out with any of the smaller tasks, such as ensuring that the new ICD-11 codes are included, or updated the disease frequency and mortality with the Global Burden of Disease study, published last October.

Administrators' newsletter – February 2026

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2026).

Arbitration

  • Due to the result of a recent motion, a rough consensus of administrators at the arbitration enforcement noticeboard may impose an expanded topic ban on Israel, Israelis, Jews, Judaism, Palestine, Palestinians, Islam, and/or Arabs, if an editor's Arab-Israeli conflict topic ban is determined to be insufficient to prevent disruption. At least one diff per area expanded into should be cited.

Featured article review for meningitis

I have nominated Meningitis for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets the featured article criteria, or help improve the article. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" in regard to the article's featured status (see review instructions).

The article has great bones still after all these years. Would be great if you had some time to help update the article. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 21:29, 11 February 2026 (UTC)

@Femke: Goeiemiddag! I think the key challenge is to refresh the references, and a dedicated editor with a medical background should be able to do this fairly swiftly. Not a lot has changed in the practical management of this condition since I brought it to FA, and the IDSA has not updated its guidance since 2004 (gasp). I will try to comment when I find the time. Coeliac disease scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that Coeliac disease has been scheduled as today's featured article for 15 April 2026. Please check that the article needs no amendments. Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 2026, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/April 2026. Please keep an eye on that page, as notifications of copy edits to or queries about the draft blurb may be posted there. I also suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from two days before it appears on the Main Page. Thanks, and congratulations on your work! Z1720 (talk) 19:06, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

Arbitration

  • Following a motion, remedy 9.1 of the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been amended to limit TenPoundHammer to one XfD nomination or PROD per 24-hour period.
  • Following a motion, the Iskandar323 further POV pushing motion has been rescinded.
  • The Arbitration Committee has passed a housekeeping motion rescinding a number of outdated remedies and enforcement provisions across multiple legacy cases. In most instances, existing sanctions remain in force and continue to be appealable through the usual processes, while some case-specific remedies were amended or clarified.

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Changes to user permissions made from Meta are now included in the local user permissions log (T6055).
  • The autoconfirmed user group will soon be modified such that the four-day account age requirement begins when an account makes its first edit (T418484).

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case SchroCat has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 15 April.
  • Per a recent motion, appeals of blocks from the conflict-of-interest VRT queue are, by default, appealed on-wiki through the normal unblock process. However, they may be heard by the Committee if COIVRTers disagree on the interpretation of the evidence or believe ArbCom would be better suited to hear the appeal. Administrators are also advised that loosening or lifting such blocks without the consent of someone with access to the queue or ArbCom can be grounds for desysopping.
  • Per a recent motion, restrictions issued directly by the Committee may now be enforced with blocks which work exactly like contentious topic blocks.
  • The arbitration case Maghreb has been closed.
