Question on non-free image use

Hello Nthep, I would be obliged if you could kindly advise me whether the following logo of Trinity College, Kandy, may be added and used as a non-free image in the infobox of the article. URLs: , . The referenced logo is currently 1321 × 2434 pixels in dimension and 102 KB in size. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Best regards. QEnigma 论 14:48, 17 August 2025 (UTC)

@QEnigma Hi, I don't see a problem with using this as fair use. Regarding the sizing, you can either resize it yourself (233 x 429 is my suggestion) or once you've uploaded it add {{non-free reduce}} to the image and a bot will take care of it. Nthep (talk) 15:37, 17 August 2025 (UTC)
Thank you, Nthep. I greatly appreciate your advice and input. QEnigma 论 16:56, 17 August 2025 (UTC)
Nthep, Another question on which I wish to seek clarification is the depiction of sports trophies and shields as non-free images at low resolution. As an example, I am referring to the article Bradby Shield Encounter and whether it would be permissible to display a cropped image of this on the infobox. At present the cropped image is of 2311 x 2286 pixels in dimension and 2.695 MB in size. Thank you. QEnigma 论 12:37, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
@QEnigma When you start getting into other people's images of "other stuff" then you're going to consider two copyrights, the copyright of the image holder and the copyright of the "other stuff" . "Other stuff" here being the Bradby Shield itself. I see that the article on the shield doesn't say who the manufacturer was just that it was "crafted by Kandyan silversmiths". I'm guessing though that it's hallmarked and therefore the maker can be deduced. If so then it's likely that under Sri Lanka's Intellectual Property Act, No. 36 of 2003 it's still in copyright. The image as is clearly stated on the Flickr link is definitely in copyright. So yes, you could use a crop of that image as long as your rationale makes it clear that neither the image nor the shield are out of copyright (Incidentally you might want to use a lower-res version of this from here).
Regarding size, the rule of thumb and certainly what the bot does when rescaling images is to make the dimensions such that the height x width in pixels is <100,000. There is a tool that will do the calculation for you - it's in Chinese but it's simple to understand, put width in one box, height in the other (not the red ones) and hit the button below that column to give you suggested new dimensions. As before if you don't have software allowing you to rescale images then you can get the bot to do it for you. Nthep (talk) 13:40, 18 August 2025 (UTC)

File:Dark Side of the Moon.png

The JPEG version is now tagged as PD in only the US. The same should go for this PNG version (File:Dark Side of the Moon.png), right? I.e. I can ignore the previous FFD discussion on the PNG version and then be bold, right? George Ho (talk) 19:15, 12 September 2025 (UTC)

@George Ho fine by me. I'd suggest leaving the non-free rationale as it's non-free in the UK and add the PD-US only tag. Nthep (talk) 19:56, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
In other words, no undeleting past revisions then. What if I want them undeleted? BTW, already added the tag. George Ho (talk) 21:29, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
@George Ho they can be undeleted as it's PD in the US, but to what end? Nthep (talk) 21:59, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
If still "non-free", then the past revisions shouldn't be undeleted. We still want the image be as free and accessible as possible for especially American users (of English Wikipedia). Also, consistency matters still, and I don't want users to be confused between PNG and JPEG. George Ho (talk) 23:02, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
Also, I'm uncertain whether to re-take the PNG version back to FFD for consensus only to result in "no consensus" again. George Ho (talk) 23:05, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
why take it back to FFD? Do you want one of the deleting? Nthep (talk) 13:44, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
Just asking the community whether to continue using the non-free rationale as long as the PNG version is also "free" in only the US. George Ho (talk) 21:17, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
